Can you finance a software licence?

Yes, but be clear about what is happening. Software cannot be repossessed. A licence is a right to use, granted to your business, and it has no resale value and nothing a funder could ever collect. So software finance is unsecured lending assessed entirely on your company — filed accounts, how long you have traded, bank conduct and the size of the commitment against turnover. There is no used market and no concept of used licences here. The point to plan for is that renewal comes round again, so each cycle is a fresh funding decision rather than a continuation.

Used kit: No. Licences are granted to a named business and generally cannot be transferred or resold, so there is no second-hand market and nothing for a funder to take security over.

What would a software licence cost per month?

Business asset finance is quoted on a flat rate, so that is what this shows — with the equivalent APR underneath, because the two are not the same number. A quick guide only; your actual rate depends on the asset, term, deposit and lender.

Representative example: on Hire Purchase, borrowing £25,000 over 48 months at a 6.0% flat rate (equivalent to 11.5% APR representative), you would repay around £646 a month; total amount repayable approximately £31,000, of which £6,000 is the cost of finance. This calculator is for illustration only — it is not a quote or an offer of finance, and the rate and repayments you are offered will depend on the asset, term, deposit and your circumstances. How lenders treat it

Software is the purest covenant lend in my book. There is no serial number, no recovery, no auction; if the agreement fails I have nothing but a claim against the company. That is not a reason to refuse it — business software is as essential as premises now, and a firm renewing a platform it runs on every day is making a non-discretionary commitment. What I need is a business that can plainly carry the payments from trading income. I look at accounts, at management figures if the last set is dated, and at whether the facility is proportionate. Newer or thinner companies will usually need director support. What I will not do is lend over a period longer than the licence actually covers.

Who buys one

Businesses facing a large annual renewal that arrives all at once — design practices with seat-based subscriptions, firms renewing enterprise agreements, and companies deploying a new platform across every user at the same time. The trigger is usually cash flow timing rather than affordability: the software is essential and the value is clear, but paying twelve months up front distorts a quarter. Firms migrating from perpetual licences to subscription models come to us when the change lands.

How it is treated for tax

Bought on hire purchase, business plant and machinery normally qualifies for capital allowances on the full cost even though you pay for it monthly, which is a large part of why hire purchase is the common structure. On a finance lease you generally set the rentals against profit instead. The rules change between budgets and your position depends on how you trade, so treat this as the direction of travel and get your accountant to confirm the detail before you commit.

Software licence finance questions

Can software really be financed if it cannot be repossessed?

Yes. Funders lend against businesses, not only against objects, and software finance is simply an unsecured facility for a defined purpose. The absence of security changes the assessment rather than the availability: expect the underwriter to concentrate on your accounts, trading history and bank conduct rather than on what you are buying.

Why would I finance an annual subscription rather than just pay it?

Cash flow timing, usually. A renewal covering every user lands as one invoice, and businesses often prefer that cost spread across the months they actually use it. Whether it makes sense for you is a commercial judgement about the use of your working capital, and your accountant is best placed to advise.

Can software be financed alongside hardware?

Yes, and that is the most common structure. Funders are comfortable with a mixed invoice where licences accompany servers, laptops or network equipment, and the tangible element gives the application some substance. Pure software facilities are perfectly possible too; they are simply assessed as unsecured lending from the start.

What happens at the end of the agreement?

The agreement ends, and your relationship with the software vendor continues on whatever terms you have with them. Finance does not extend your licence and its end does not terminate your subscription. If you intend to renew, treat it as a new funding conversation and start it before the renewal date arrives.

Will a funder lend for a longer period than the licence covers?

Reputable funders will not, and you should be cautious of anyone who offers to. Paying for software long after the right to use it has lapsed is a poor position to be in, and responsible underwriters match the commitment to the period the licence covers. We work to that principle when placing these facilities.
