Can you finance a glass toughening furnace?

Yes, but this is one of the more involved cases in glass. A toughening furnace is a high value hard asset and funds on hire purchase, though underwriters go deeper than usual because the buyer pool at resale is small and moving a furnace is a major undertaking. Used furnaces are fundable. The decisive issue is installation: the furnace needs a suitable building, heavy power, and a long commissioning and recipe development period before it produces saleable glass, and none of that commissioning time is funded.

Used kit: Yes — used furnaces are fundable and units ten to fifteen years old are considered, though relocation cost and control support weigh heavily on the valuation.

What would a glass toughening furnace cost per month?

Business asset finance is quoted on a flat rate, so that is what this shows — with the equivalent APR underneath, because the two are not the same number. A quick guide only; your actual rate depends on the asset, term, deposit and lender.

Representative example: on Hire Purchase, borrowing £25,000 over 48 months at a 6.0% flat rate (equivalent to 11.5% APR representative), you would repay around £646 a month; total amount repayable approximately £31,000, of which £6,000 is the cost of finance. This calculator is for illustration only — it is not a quote or an offer of finance, and the rate and repayments you are offered will depend on the asset, term, deposit and your circumstances. How lenders treat it

A furnace is hard security in principle and awkward in practice. Values are high, manufacturers are well known and export demand exists, but there are only so many businesses in the UK who could take one on, and de-installing and relocating a furnace is expensive enough to knock the recovery figure down. Underwriters therefore weigh the accounts, the volume you already buy in and your track record more heavily than on a smaller machine. The furnace is bolted down with heavy power and often a dedicated compressor house, so the fixture question is unavoidable and a landlord waiver is normally required if you lease. Rollers and consumables are excluded. Declines usually involve first-time tougheners with thin balance sheets.

Who buys one

Typically an established glass processor sending thousands of square metres a year out for toughening and watching lead times and haulage costs mount, often after a toughener lets them down on a contract. Also architectural glass firms needing control over quality and heat soak testing, and IGU makers who want to supply toughened units complete rather than buy the glass in.

How it is treated for tax

Bought on hire purchase, business plant and machinery normally qualifies for capital allowances on the full cost even though you pay for it monthly, which is a large part of why hire purchase is the common structure. On a finance lease you generally set the rentals against profit instead. The rules change between budgets and your position depends on how you trade, so treat this as the direction of travel and get your accountant to confirm the detail before you commit.

Glass toughening furnace finance questions

Why is a furnace underwritten more cautiously than other glass machinery?

Because of the resale reality. Only a handful of UK businesses could use one, and taking a furnace out and moving it is a serious job. That reduces what a funder could realistically recover, so the decision rests more on your trading strength than on the asset alone.

Is commissioning time funded?

No. Engineer time, recipe development and the glass broken proving the process are services and materials, not assets. Payments generally begin on delivery and acceptance, so allow for a period where the furnace is costing money before it is producing saleable units.

Do I need heat soak testing as well?

Commercially it depends on your market, particularly for structural and overhead applications. A heat soak oven is a separate asset and can be funded on the same agreement as the furnace. Decide early, because retro-fitting the capability later is a second project.

Will the landlord definitely need to be involved?

If you lease, almost certainly. A furnace anchored to the floor with heavy fixed services is exactly the kind of plant that can be argued to have become part of the building. A short waiver from the landlord confirming ownership resolves it, but it takes time to obtain.

Can I fund a furnace bought from a closing processor?

Yes, and that is a route worth exploring. The funder will want an inspection, proof of clear title and a credible de-installation and re-commissioning plan with costs. The removal work itself is a service and will not be fundable, so budget for it separately.
