Can you finance ADAS calibration equipment?

Yes, with a caveat about what is actually being funded. The frame, targets and alignment hardware are physical assets and fund on hire purchase. The software, the vehicle coverage subscription and the annual licence are not, and on ADAS equipment those recurring costs are a significant part of the true cost of ownership. Used equipment is fundable but the market is young and coverage requirements change, so funders keep terms shorter than they would on mechanical garage kit. Calibration space is the other thing to plan for.

Used kit: Rarely straightforward — used ADAS equipment funds only where it is a supported system with transferable licensing, and only a few years old.

What would ADAS calibration equipment cost per month?

Business asset finance is quoted on a flat rate, so that is what this shows — with the equivalent APR underneath, because the two are not the same number. A quick guide only; your actual rate depends on the asset, term, deposit and lender.

Representative example: on Hire Purchase, borrowing £25,000 over 48 months at a 6.0% flat rate (equivalent to 11.5% APR representative), you would repay around £646 a month; total amount repayable approximately £31,000, of which £6,000 is the cost of finance. This calculator is for illustration only — it is not a quote or an offer of finance, and the rate and repayments you are offered will depend on the asset, term, deposit and your circumstances. How lenders treat it

Funders see the hardware clearly and the software not at all. Frames, target boards, alignment wheel clamps and the measuring system are identifiable assets with resale value through diagnostic equipment dealers. Software subscriptions, vehicle coverage updates and training cannot be funded because there is nothing to recover, and this is where buyers are most often caught out, since the annual licence is a permanent overhead. The equipment is portable and does not become a fixture, so no landlord waiver arises, although marking out and levelling a calibration bay is a premises cost. Terms are kept shorter because the technology is still moving. Declines involve unsupported imported systems and businesses with no collision or glass trading history.

Who buys one

Usually a bodyshop or windscreen fitter who has been driving cars to a third party for calibration after every screen or camera job, losing half a day each time. Also main dealer trained technicians setting up independent specialist workshops, and multi-site garages centralising calibration work at one properly prepared bay.

How it is treated for tax

Bought on hire purchase, business plant and machinery normally qualifies for capital allowances on the full cost even though you pay for it monthly, which is a large part of why hire purchase is the common structure. On a finance lease you generally set the rentals against profit instead. The rules change between budgets and your position depends on how you trade, so treat this as the direction of travel and get your accountant to confirm the detail before you commit.

ADAS calibration equipment finance questions

Can the annual software subscription be financed?

No. A subscription is a recurring service with no asset behind it, so a funder has nothing to secure. On ADAS this matters more than usual because coverage licences are a permanent cost. Treat the subscription as an overhead and fund the hardware only.

Do I need a dedicated calibration bay?

Effectively yes. Most systems require a level floor, controlled lighting and specific clear distances around the vehicle, marked out accurately. Preparing that space is a premises cost outside the finance, and it is worth checking your unit can accommodate it before you order equipment.

Why are terms shorter on ADAS than on a lift?

Because the technology is moving quickly and the value of a system depends on the vehicles it can cover. A funder keeps the agreement inside the period where the equipment remains current and saleable, rather than letting it run past the point where the kit is superseded.

Can a windscreen fitting business fund this?

Yes, and it is one of the most common reasons for buying. Glass replacement on modern vehicles frequently requires camera recalibration, so the commercial case is clear. Underwriters will want your trading figures and evidence of the volume driving the purchase.

Is second-hand ADAS equipment worth considering?

Be careful. The hardware may be fine while the software licence is non-transferable or the coverage is out of date, which leaves you with a frame you cannot use. Funders are cautious for exactly that reason. Check licensing with the manufacturer before agreeing anything.
