Can you finance weighing equipment?
Yes, though the answer splits sharply by size. Platform scales, pallet weighers and checkweighers are movable machines with calibration certificates and real second-hand value, so they fund straightforwardly, usually within a wider package because individual units are inexpensive. A weighbridge is a different proposition: much of the cost is groundworks, a pit and a concrete deck, which become part of the land. Funders will finance weighbridges, but the civil element is treated as a fixture and underwritten against your business.

What would weighing equipment cost per month?
Business asset finance is quoted on a flat rate, so that is what this shows — with the equivalent APR underneath, because the two are not the same number. A quick guide only; your actual rate depends on the asset, term, deposit and lender.
Representative example: on Hire Purchase, borrowing £25,000 over 48 months at a 6.0% flat rate (equivalent to 11.5% APR representative), you would repay around £646 a month; total amount repayable approximately £31,000, of which £6,000 is the cost of finance. How lenders treat it
Two very different asset profiles filed under one heading, and it pays to separate them in an application. Portable scales, checkweighers and forklift-mounted weighers are compact machines from recognised manufacturers, easy to identify and to move, and funders are relaxed. Weighbridges are largely a construction project: excavation, foundations, a pit or ramps, a concrete or steel deck and load cells. The load cells and indicator are equipment; the hole in the ground is not. Funders will generally lend on the whole scheme but assess it on your covenant, and on a leased yard the landlord question arises exactly as it does with racking. Trade-approved installations also carry verification obligations that affect their value and usability.

How it is treated for tax
Bought on hire purchase, business plant and machinery normally qualifies for capital allowances on the full cost even though you pay for it monthly, which is a large part of why hire purchase is the common structure. On a finance lease you generally set the rentals against profit instead. The rules change between budgets and your position depends on how you trade, so treat this as the direction of travel and get your accountant to confirm the detail before you commit.
Weighing equipment finance questions
Can the groundworks for a weighbridge be financed?
Usually they can be included within the total project, but a funder recognises that excavation and concrete are not recoverable assets. That means the decision rests on your accounts rather than on the installation. Ask the supplier to itemise civils separately from the equipment so a funder can see the split clearly.
Does trade approval affect fundability?
Not directly, but it matters to value. A trade-approved installation must be verified and maintained to remain legal for commercial transactions, and an unverified bridge cannot be used to bill customers. Funders will expect the verification to be part of the supplier’s scope on a new installation.
Are forklift-mounted weighing systems fundable?
Yes, and they are easy cases. A forklift scale is a bolt-on system with a serial number that can be transferred between trucks, so it behaves like an attachment. It is usually funded with the truck itself, which is tidier than a separate agreement for a comparatively small amount.
Can we finance scales across several depots?
Yes. A rollout of platform and bench scales across multiple sites adds up to a sensible facility, and a schedule listing each unit and its location keeps the record clean. Individually the scales are too small to fund, which is exactly why the rollout is the right unit of finance.
Is calibration and service included?
Not within the finance agreement itself, though many suppliers sell a maintenance and calibration contract alongside the equipment. That is a service arrangement paid separately. Where the supplier bundles the first verification into the purchase price it forms part of the invoice and is funded with the equipment.
