Can you finance a muck spreader?

Yes. Muck spreaders are a simple asset for a funder to understand and hire purchase is the normal route. Used machines are commonly funded because a well-built spreader body outlasts several tractors. The complication is that spreaders live a hard life in corrosive material, so condition varies enormously between two machines of the same age. A funder will want to know about floor chains, the beater assembly and whether the body has been patched. If the machine has weigh cells and a spreading rate controller, make sure they are itemised on the invoice so their value is recognised.

Used kit: Yes, provided the body, floor chain and beaters are sound

What would a muck spreader cost per month?

Business asset finance is quoted on a flat rate, so that is what this shows — with the equivalent APR underneath, because the two are not the same number. A quick guide only; your actual rate depends on the asset, term, deposit and lender.

Representative example: on Hire Purchase, borrowing £25,000 over 48 months at a 6.0% flat rate (equivalent to 11.5% APR representative), you would repay around £646 a month; total amount repayable approximately £31,000, of which £6,000 is the cost of finance. This calculator is for illustration only — it is not a quote or an offer of finance, and the rate and repayments you are offered will depend on the asset, term, deposit and your circumstances. How lenders treat it

Spreaders are a mid-to-low value asset with a durable secondhand market, particularly the heavier twin vertical beater machines from the established UK and Irish builders. Funders will fund them readily but will look at the body: rust-through in a spreader is terminal in a way that it is not on a trailer, and a machine that has stood loaded over winter is worth less. Weigh systems and rate controllers add resale value and are worth declaring. Because muck spreading is squeezed into narrow windows in spring and after harvest, contractors can often get repayments shaped to those periods. This class usually belongs with an agricultural funder rather than a plant lender, who will not know what they are looking at.

Who buys one

Livestock and mixed farms spreading farmyard manure, poultry and pig units handling litter and solid muck, and contractors spreading for arable neighbours importing organic manures. The trigger is usually a farm moving to nutrient planning and needing accurate application rates rather than an approximate spread, or an old spreader whose floor chain has failed in the middle of a dry spell when the ground was finally fit.

How it is treated for tax

Bought on hire purchase, business plant and machinery normally qualifies for capital allowances on the full cost even though you pay for it monthly, which is a large part of why hire purchase is the common structure. On a finance lease you generally set the rentals against profit instead. The rules change between budgets and your position depends on how you trade, so treat this as the direction of travel and get your accountant to confirm the detail before you commit.

Muck spreader finance questions

What do lenders check on a used muck spreader?

Body condition first. Muck is corrosive and a body that has been patched repeatedly or has thin sections in the floor will be marked down hard. After that they look at the floor chain, the beater gearbox and the running gear. A machine that has been washed off and stored empty is worth noticeably more than one left loaded.

Can I include weigh cells and a rate controller in the finance?

Yes, and you should itemise them. Nutrient management and assurance scheme requirements mean accurate application is increasingly expected, and a spreader with a calibrated weigh system is more valuable secondhand. Have the dealer list the system on the same invoice as the machine.

Can a contractor finance a spreader for importing manures onto arable land?

Yes, and it is a growing part of the trade. Funders will want to see the spreading contracts or invoice history and understand whether you hold storage and haulage arrangements. Seasonal repayment profiles that reflect spring and post-harvest spreading windows are usually available.

Is it better to fund the spreader and the tractor together?

If you are buying both at once from the same dealer, one invoice and one agreement is simpler and often gets a better answer, because the combined value moves the deal into a bracket more funders want. If the tractor is already owned, a standalone spreader agreement is perfectly normal.

Do lenders treat poultry litter machines differently?

The machine is assessed the same way, but funders know litter is harder on a body than farmyard manure, so they will pay closer attention to the condition of a used machine that has been on litter all its life. On a new machine it makes no difference to the decision.
