Can you finance a log splitter?

Yes, with a caveat about size. A hydraulic splitter is a hard asset with a serial number, a recognisable manufacturer and a steady second-hand market among farmers and firewood producers, so funders are comfortable with it. The caveat is that a small splitter can fall below the minimum advance most asset funders will write, which is why it is frequently funded alongside a saw bench, a conveyor or a tractor. Used splitters are readily fundable because they are mechanically simple and age well. Watch the power source: a machine specified for a tractor you do not own is a common and avoidable problem.

Used kit: Yes — used splitters are fundable and hold value well, though a low-value older machine may fall under the funder minimum on its own.

What would a log splitter cost per month?

Business asset finance is quoted on a flat rate, so that is what this shows — with the equivalent APR underneath, because the two are not the same number. A quick guide only; your actual rate depends on the asset, term, deposit and lender.

Representative example: on Hire Purchase, borrowing £25,000 over 48 months at a 6.0% flat rate (equivalent to 11.5% APR representative), you would repay around £646 a month; total amount repayable approximately £31,000, of which £6,000 is the cost of finance. This calculator is for illustration only — it is not a quote or an offer of finance, and the rate and repayments you are offered will depend on the asset, term, deposit and your circumstances. How lenders treat it

Funders treat splitters as small agricultural plant, which means a wide panel including agricultural lenders who know the brands, but also a minimum advance that a single machine may not reach. Bundling with other firewood kit from the same supplier solves that and usually prices better. The income behind firewood is retail and seasonal, peaking in autumn and winter, and funders working this sector understand that but will ask how the summer months are covered — often by arb work or farming income. Private sales between farms and firewood producers are common, and need an invoice, a serial number and confirmation of clear title. Declines are usually about size and profile rather than the asset: very small requests from new-starts with no supporting history are the ones that struggle.

Who buys one

Tree surgeons turning arisings into a retail firewood line rather than paying to tip cordwood, and farms with a woodland block selling logs locally. The trigger is usually the volume of timber piling up in the yard, or a firewood customer base that has outgrown a hand maul and a weekend. Estate and sawmill businesses buy larger splitters to handle butts that a processor cannot take.

How it is treated for tax

Bought on hire purchase, business plant and machinery normally qualifies for capital allowances on the full cost even though you pay for it monthly, which is a large part of why hire purchase is the common structure. On a finance lease you generally set the rentals against profit instead. The rules change between budgets and your position depends on how you trade, so treat this as the direction of travel and get your accountant to confirm the detail before you commit.

Log splitter finance questions

Is a log splitter big enough to finance on its own?

Sometimes not. Many funders set a minimum advance and a single splitter can sit below it. The practical answer is to package it with the other kit you need — a saw bench, a conveyor, a tractor — on one supplier invoice, which clears the minimum and usually improves the terms you are offered.

Can I fund a splitter and a processor together?

Yes, and many firewood producers do exactly that when setting up a line. One invoice from one supplier covering the processor, splitter and conveyor is the cleanest structure. It keeps the paperwork to a single agreement and gives the funder a substantial machine to secure against rather than several small items.

Does it matter whether the splitter is tractor-driven or has its own engine?

Not for the credit decision, but it matters for resale and for whether the machine works for you. A tractor-driven unit needs a tractor with the right power take-off, which funders will occasionally ask about if you are a new start. Self-powered machines have a marginally wider resale market.

I sell firewood seasonally — will that count against me?

No, provided you explain it. Firewood income concentrates in autumn and winter, and funders in this sector expect that. They will want to know how payments are covered in summer, whether that is arb work, farming income or a reserve. Being upfront about the cycle works better than presenting a flat year.

Can I finance a splitter bought at a farm sale or auction?

Sometimes, though auction purchases are harder work. Many funders will not pay an auction house directly, and timescales are tight because payment is usually due immediately. Where it can be done you will need the lot invoice, the serial number and confirmation of title. Speak to a broker before the sale, not after.
