Less separates these two than most buyers assume, because they share a great deal of engineering history through the Vauxhall–Renault and later Stellantis arrangements. Start with the generation, not the badge
This is the single most useful thing to understand about this comparison. Vivaro and Trafic have been closely related for much of their history, and the underpinnings have changed hands more than once. Both sit in the mid-size class and both are commonly bought for urban and regional work: trades, mobile servicing, multi-drop delivery, small-scale distribution. Both are widely available in short and long wheelbase, panel van and crew forms, and both are common conversion bases.
Where a real difference tends to show up is in the specific variant mix available at your budget. On a given used budget you may find a longer, better-specified, lower-mileage example of one than the other simply because of how they sold in your region. That is a genuine reason to prefer one van over the other, and it has nothing to do with the badge.
Payload and load space for your job
Do not buy on quoted figures for either. Payload and load dimensions in this class shift between wheelbase, roof height, GVW rating, engine and trim, and the differences are large enough to matter to a working buyer.
Take your heaviest realistic working load — people, fuel, racking, ply lining, tools, materials, any tail lift — and your longest and bulkiest regular item. Check both against the exact variant, using the current manufacturer specification for a new van and the V5C and plate for a used one. In this class, pay particular attention to the bulkhead arrangement and any load-through provision, because it determines whether long items go in at all, and to the side door aperture rather than total volume.

- Parts. Both benefit from shared componentry and a large European parts pool, which generally keeps consumables affordable. Availability of model-specific electronic and emissions parts is the thing to check, not brake pads.
- Servicing. Compare the manufacturer schedule for the exact engine, and get real quotes from two or three garages you would actually use.
- Fuel. Determined by route, load and driver far more than by badge on comparable engines.
- Insurance. Get quotes on the specific variant, at your postcode, with your drivers. Do not assume the two are priced alike.
- Clean air zones. Confirm the compliance status of the specific engine and registration date if you work in a charging zone.
Servicing, parts and downtime
Both networks are reasonably spread across the UK, and both models are familiar to independent garages, which is a real advantage over more niche vans. The practical questions are local: which dealer would you actually use, how long is their lead time, do they offer a replacement van, and does your independent garage have the diagnostic kit for that model year.
If the two vans you are choosing between are the same age, mileage and price, and one has a good garage ten minutes away while the other means a fifty-mile round trip, that is a legitimate reason to decide.
Residual values and how long you keep it

- Full dated service history and cambelt or chain records for the specific engine.
- DPF, EGR and AdBlue history, and any pattern of recurring emissions faults.
- Evidence of overloading: sagging rear springs, inner-edge tyre wear, distorted load floor.
- Electrical health — check every switch, light, sensor and the infotainment, as electrical niggles are the common irritation on well-used mid-size vans.
- Corrosion around the rear door hinges, sills, and any panel that has been repaired.
- The plated GVW and payload on the V5C against your real working load.
- Finance, write-off and mileage checks before a deposit.
