Bandsaw finance

A cast-frame bandsaw handles the curved and deep cuts nothing else in the shop will attempt, and it is one of the cheapest machines to keep running.

Can you finance a bandsaw?

Yes. Workshop bandsaws are funded on hire purchase as hard assets, and they are unusually easy to place because the design has barely changed in fifty years and the machines are still worth money long after purchase. Cast-frame saws from SCM, Felder, Centauro, Startrite and Agazzani all fund, new or second hand. The real constraint is not approval but scale: many bandsaws cost less than the minimum agreement a funder will issue, so the sensible move is to include it on the invoice with a planer, a saw or extraction rather than apply for it alone.

Used kit: Yes, and older cast-frame bandsaws place easily once re-tyred and set up

What would a bandsaw cost per month?

Business asset finance is quoted on a flat rate, so that is what this shows — with the equivalent APR underneath, because the two are not the same number. A quick guide only; your actual rate depends on the asset, term, deposit and lender.

Representative example: on Hire Purchase, borrowing £25,000 over 48 months at a 6.0% flat rate (equivalent to 11.5% APR representative), you would repay around £646 a month; total amount repayable approximately £31,000, of which £6,000 is the cost of finance. This calculator is for illustration only — it is not a quote or an offer of finance, and the rate and repayments you are offered will depend on the asset, term, deposit and your circumstances. How lenders treat it

Bandsaws are about as uncomplicated as asset finance gets. The frame is cast or fabricated steel, the wheels and guides are serviceable, and a well-kept machine sells within days on the trade market, so recovery value is not in doubt. Decisions come through the fast end of the market on a credit search and a guarantee rather than any real underwriting. The two things that make a case awkward are ticket size, which can drop below funder minimums, and buying from a private seller where title needs evidencing. Age is effectively irrelevant provided the machine is complete and safe. Where a saw is bought with new tyres, guides and a blade welder fitted, put all of it on one invoice.

Who buys one

Cabinet makers, boatbuilders, staircase shops and bespoke furniture makers cutting curves, deep ripping stock or resawing small sections for veneers and laminated work. The purchase usually follows a job type rather than growth — a run of curved handrail, shaped brackets or bandsawn box work that a circular saw cannot do. Second machines get bought so one saw stays set up for fine blades and another for ripping.

How it is treated for tax

Bought on hire purchase, business plant and machinery normally qualifies for capital allowances on the full cost even though you pay for it monthly, which is a large part of why hire purchase is the common structure. On a finance lease you generally set the rentals against profit instead. The rules change between budgets and your position depends on how you trade, so treat this as the direction of travel and get your accountant to confirm the detail before you commit.

Bandsaw finance questions

Is a bandsaw too cheap to finance?

Often as a single item, yes. Most funders will not write an agreement below a certain value because the administration outweighs the return. The workaround is simple: add the bandsaw to an order that includes a bigger machine or your extraction, and it funds as part of the total without anyone treating it as a separate application.

Can I finance a bandsaw bought at auction?

It is possible but it takes more work than a dealer purchase. Auction houses invoice quickly and expect payment on similar timescales, which does not always suit a funder paying out on delivery and acceptance. Speak to us before you bid so the approval is in place, rather than winning a lot and then looking for money.

Does a blade welder count as part of the machine?

If it is bought at the same time and appears on the same invoice, generally yes. A welder and grinder unit is durable equipment with its own value, so it sits comfortably in the package. Bought separately later it becomes another small item that is not economic to finance on its own.

What should I check on a second-hand bandsaw?

Wheel tyres, guide condition, wheel alignment, the condition of the table trunnion and whether the brake and guarding meet current expectations. None of that affects whether a funder will lend, but all of it affects whether the machine will cut straight. A dealer who has re-tyred and set the saw up saves you the job.

Hire purchase or lease for a small machine like this?

Hire purchase, almost always. A bandsaw will still be working long after the agreement finishes, so owning it outright at the end is worth more than any accounting advantage of leasing. It is also the simpler product to administer, and on a small ticket simplicity is worth having.
