Finger jointing turns short offcuts into full-length stock, and for anyone buying hardwood by the cubic metre it is one of the fastest paybacks in the shop.

Yes. Finger jointing shapers, presses and full automatic lines are funded as industrial plant on hire purchase or finance lease. Used machines fund well because the technology is stable and the machines are heavily built. The point worth understanding is that a finger jointer is rarely one machine — a working line involves a defect crosscut, a shaper to cut the profile, a glue applicator and a press, and sometimes high-frequency curing. Funders are much happier looking at a coherent line on one quote than at a shaper arriving in isolation with the rest to follow.

Business asset finance is quoted on a flat rate, so that is what this shows — with the equivalent APR underneath, because the two are not the same number. A quick guide only; your actual rate depends on the asset, term, deposit and lender.
Representative example: on Hire Purchase, borrowing £25,000 over 48 months at a 6.0% flat rate (equivalent to 11.5% APR representative), you would repay around £646 a month; total amount repayable approximately £31,000, of which £6,000 is the cost of finance. This calculator is for illustration only — it is not a quote or an offer of finance, and the rate and repayments you are offered will depend on the asset, term, deposit and your circumstances. CW Asset Finance is a credit broker, not a lender, and may receive a commission from the lender that funds your agreement. All finance is subject to status, affordability and lender approval. CW Asset Finance is an Appointed Representative of Rural Finance Limited, which is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FRN 630701).
Underwriters like the logic of this purchase because the payback is measurable in material yield, which is an easier story to believe than a vague efficiency claim. The assets themselves are heavy, long-lived and traded within the timber industry, so recovery value holds. Where funders become wary is scope creep: a jointing line can grow to include conveyors, stackers, glue systems and building modifications, and the recoverable share of that total shrinks as it grows. Present the shaper and press as the core assets, with handling itemised separately, and the case is much more fundable. Larger lines will need filed accounts, a note on timber volumes and usually a director guarantee, which is normal at that size.
Examples of the machines we are asked to fund. This is not an exhaustive list — if what you are buying is not here, it does not mean we cannot fund it. Your supplier quote is what the agreement is written against.

Joinery manufacturers laminating their own stock for windows and doors, timber merchants adding value to short lengths, and producers of glulam, blockboard and engineered components. The reason to invest is waste: a shop cutting around knots and shakes generates a pallet of short clean timber every week that is currently firewood. Contract requirements for jointed and laminated sections in painted joinery are the other driver.

Bought on hire purchase, business plant and machinery normally qualifies for capital allowances on the full cost even though you pay for it monthly, which is a large part of why hire purchase is the common structure. On a finance lease you generally set the rentals against profit instead. The rules change between budgets and your position depends on how you trade, so treat this as the direction of travel and get your accountant to confirm the detail before you commit.
It can be done but it is rarely the best route. Each stage becomes its own agreement with its own set-up, and the machines are worth less individually than as a working line. If the plan is to build up over time, tell us the whole plan now so the first agreement is structured with the later additions in mind.
Do the sums on your actual offcut pile before committing. Shops converting a significant weekly volume of short clean hardwood usually see it stack up quickly. At low volume the labour of sorting and handling can eat the saving. A manual shaper and press is the low-cost way to test the idea before funding a full line.
The applicator and pumping equipment yes, the adhesive no. Applicators are proper equipment with their own value. Drums of glue are stock, and a funder cannot advance against material you will consume. Keep adhesive on your trade account and the machine side of the invoice stays clean.
Certification and testing are your responsibility, not the funder. If you intend to sell jointed timber into structural applications you will need the relevant approvals and quality procedures in place. It does not affect whether the machine can be funded, but it very much affects whether the investment pays.
Where you own it outright, usually yes. Industrial timber plant carries genuine value and refinance can free working capital against it. The funder will want the original invoices, evidence that no other agreement exists over the machines, and an inspection or detailed photographs of the line in place and running.
