Cutting timber to length accurately and quickly is where a lot of yield is won or lost, and optimising crosscuts pay for themselves in waste alone.

Yes. Pusher crosscuts, radial arm saws and fully optimising cross-cutting lines are funded as hard assets on hire purchase or finance lease. Mechanical saws fund easily at almost any age because they are simple, heavy and always in demand. Optimisers with scanners and length-measuring software are assessed more like a CNC, so control support matters. The element people forget is what happens either side of the saw — infeed decks, outfeed conveyors and waste handling are usually quoted separately and can quietly double the project cost if they are not in the original plan.

Business asset finance is quoted on a flat rate, so that is what this shows — with the equivalent APR underneath, because the two are not the same number. A quick guide only; your actual rate depends on the asset, term, deposit and lender.
Representative example: on Hire Purchase, borrowing £25,000 over 48 months at a 6.0% flat rate (equivalent to 11.5% APR representative), you would repay around £646 a month; total amount repayable approximately £31,000, of which £6,000 is the cost of finance. This calculator is for illustration only — it is not a quote or an offer of finance, and the rate and repayments you are offered will depend on the asset, term, deposit and your circumstances. CW Asset Finance is a credit broker, not a lender, and may receive a commission from the lender that funds your agreement. All finance is subject to status, affordability and lender approval. CW Asset Finance is an Appointed Representative of Rural Finance Limited, which is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FRN 630701).
These divide cleanly. A manual pusher or radial arm saw is cheap, indestructible and sells easily, so it goes through the quick end of the market with barely a question about the asset. An optimising line with a scanner, marking system and software moves into a different bracket entirely: larger value, more electronics, narrower resale, and underwriters who want accounts and a sensible explanation of the payback. Where these applications fall over is the conveyor content. Roller decks and chain conveyors are worth little once lifted out of your building, so a quote that is mostly handling will get discounted. Ask for the saw, the handling and the software as separate lines and there is far more room to structure it properly.
Examples of the machines we are asked to fund. This is not an exhaustive list — if what you are buying is not here, it does not mean we cannot fund it. Your supplier quote is what the agreement is written against.

Timber merchants, pallet and fencing producers, joinery manufacturers cutting components to length, and roof truss fabricators. The purchase is normally driven by waste: cutting around defects by eye is throwing away good timber, and an optimiser recovers it. The other trigger is throughput, where one operator on a radial arm saw is holding up a moulder or a jointing line downstream.

Bought on hire purchase, business plant and machinery normally qualifies for capital allowances on the full cost even though you pay for it monthly, which is a large part of why hire purchase is the common structure. On a finance lease you generally set the rentals against profit instead. The rules change between budgets and your position depends on how you trade, so treat this as the direction of travel and get your accountant to confirm the detail before you commit.
It depends on your timber cost and volume. An optimiser recovers usable lengths a person would cut through, and on high-value hardwood that saving can be significant. On cheap softwood at low volume it is harder to justify. The funding treats them differently too, so work out the payback before deciding which machine to apply for.
Partly. Powered conveyors and roller decks are equipment and can be included, but they have weak recovery value, so funders watch the proportion. Where handling is more than a modest share of the quote, expect a conversation. Separating the saw from the handling on the supplier invoice gives us something to work with.
Yes, and they change hands constantly. Funders are untroubled by the age of a mechanical crosscut because it is a simple machine with a permanent market. The practical issues are guarding and braking to current standards, which matter for your own compliance and insurance rather than for the credit decision.
Only if the machine needs it to do your job. Defect-marking systems and scanners add real capability and real cost, and the software element carries no resale value, so some funders reduce the advance against it. Where it is bundled into a manufacturer turnkey quote it is usually accepted as part of the package.
Yes, and that is a common pairing because the two machines feed each other. Presenting them as one investment gives an underwriter a clearer picture of the production change you are making, and puts the stronger asset alongside the smaller one. It also leaves you with a single agreement rather than two.
