How much does a minibus cost in the UK?
Real asking prices for minibuses and coaches — and the £8,000 you need to prove you have before you can run either one commercially.
A used 17-seat minibus runs about £12,000 to £27,995 plus VAT depending on mileage. A wheelchair-accessible 16-seater is about £72,000. Coaches run from about £9,995 for a 1999 machine to £284,950 new.
But before any of that: running either commercially needs £8,000 of evidenced funds for the first vehicle. That is not a fee, and it competes directly with your deposit.
The cost that is not the vehicle
To carry passengers for hire or reward you need a PSV operator licence, and to get one you must demonstrate financial standing. For a standard national licence that is:
| Requirement | Amount |
|---|---|
| First vehicle | £8,000 |
| Each additional vehicle | £4,500 |
This is not a fee you pay. It is capital you must show you hold, and continue to hold. A three-vehicle operation needs £17,000 of evidenced funds sitting there.
Money committed to proving financial standing is money that cannot also be your deposit. The two compete for the same cash, and people routinely plan the vehicle purchase first and discover the licence requirement second. Work them out together — it often changes what you can sensibly buy, and it is a far better conversation to have before you commit to a vehicle than after.

Coach prices — indicative only
These bands are weaker evidence than the minibus ones, and we would rather flag that than present them as equivalent. Two of the sources do not state whether prices include VAT, several listings are years-old stock, and nine entries were already marked SOLD — so they are historic asking prices rather than current ones.
| Coach | Indicative range | Listings |
|---|---|---|
| 1999 – 2002, 49 – 53 seats | £9,995 – £22,995 | 5 |
| 2006 – 2013, 48 – 87 seats | £24,995 – £93,995 | 6 |
| 2014 – 2016 Euro 6, 50 – 73 seats | £59,950 – £134,995 | 4 |
| 2020 – 2022, 53-seat PSVAR | £130,000 – £179,995 | 3 |
| New / 2024 – 26, 51 – 74 seats | £219,950 – £284,950 | 5 |
| Midi or small coach, 29 – 42 seats | £29,995 – £152,950 | 7 |
Real examples from that stock: a 1999 DAF SB3000 with Plaxton Premiere body, 53 seats, at £9,995; a 2010 Scania K360 Irizar Century, 63 seats, at £73,995; a 2014 Irizar i6, 50 seats, at £134,995; a 2020 Mercedes Tourismo PSVAR, 53 seats with 495,932km, at £179,995; and a new 2026 Neoplan Tourliner II, 55 seats PSVAR, at £284,950 plus VAT.

What PSVAR compliance adds
You can see it directly in the asking prices. From one dealer, both new:
- £284,950 — 55-seat, PSVAR compliant
- £224,950 — 52-seat, not PSVAR
Roughly £60,000 of difference, though seat count differs slightly too. Converting an existing coach was reported to start around £20,000 including certification — but that figure is from a 2020 article and the market has moved since, so treat it as a floor and get a quote rather than budgeting from it.
Whether you need it depends on the work. Scheduled and some contracted services require PSVAR; private hire generally does not. It is worth deciding before you buy, because retrofitting is the expensive route.
Tachograph fitting and calibration, livery, and the PSV annual test. We found only blog estimates for these, nothing citable from a UK provider, so we are not going to put numbers on them. They are real costs — just get your own quotes rather than trusting a figure from a page like this one.
What would it cost a month?
Put the ex-VAT price in. Remember the operator licence funds sit alongside your deposit, not inside the finance.
Prime is an established, profitable business with clean credit. Specialist covers newer businesses and credit that needs explaining — the asset itself carries part of the risk, which is why finance is often available where an unsecured loan is not.
Representative example: on Hire Purchase, borrowing £25,000 over 48 months at a 5.15% flat rate (equivalent to 9.9% APR representative), you would repay around £628 a month; total amount repayable approximately £30,150, of which £5,150 is the cost of finance. This calculator is for illustration only — it is not a quote or an offer of finance, and the rate and repayments you are offered will depend on the asset, term, deposit and your circumstances. CW Asset Finance is a credit broker, not a lender, and will receive a commission from the lender that funds your agreement. All finance is subject to status, affordability and lender approval.
Rates shown are indicative flat rates with the equivalent APR alongside — the two are not the same number. Indicative only and does not constitute a quote or an offer of finance. Subject to status and lender approval.
Common questions
How much does a minibus cost in the UK?
From 31 live UK dealer listings in October 2026, all plus VAT: a 17-seat Peugeot Boxer with between 18,000 and 68,000 miles runs about £12,000 to £27,995. A 14-seat Boxer runs about £18,750 to £34,995, and a 17-seat Ford Transit about £18,850 at 56,000 miles up to £34,850 at delivery mileage. A 9-seat vehicle at new or delivery mileage runs about £32,500 to £49,600. A 2025 wheelchair-accessible 16-seat Sprinter was listed at about £72,000, and an older 2006 16-seat minicoach at about £8,995.
How much does a coach cost?
Treat these as indicative rather than firm, because the coach listings we found are a weaker dataset than the minibus ones. Broadly: a 1999 to 2002 coach of 49 to 53 seats runs about £9,995 to £22,995; a 2006 to 2013 machine about £24,995 to £93,995; a 2014 to 2016 Euro 6 coach about £59,950 to £134,995; a 2020 to 2022 PSVAR-compliant 53-seater about £130,000 to £179,995; and a new coach about £219,950 to £284,950 plus VAT. Midi and smaller coaches of 29 to 42 seats span about £29,995 to £152,950. Several of those sources do not state their VAT treatment and some listings are historic, so verify before budgeting.
What is the £8,000 operator licence requirement?
It is the part people are most often caught by, and it is not a fee. To run passenger vehicles for hire or reward you need a PSV operator licence, and that requires you to demonstrate financial standing: for a standard national licence, £8,000 for the first vehicle and £4,500 for each additional vehicle. You must show you have those funds and continue to hold them — it is evidenced capital, not money you hand over. For anyone financing a vehicle this matters enormously, because capital tied up proving financial standing is capital that cannot go towards your deposit. Plan the two together rather than discovering the second one afterwards.
What is PSVAR and what does it add to the price?
PSVAR is the accessibility regulation covering public service vehicles, and compliance is visible directly in asking prices. One dealer listed a new PSVAR-compliant 55-seat coach at £284,950 against a non-PSVAR 52-seat at £224,950 — a gap of about £60,000. Converting an existing coach was reported to start at around £20,000 including certification, but that figure comes from a 2020 article and should be treated as a floor rather than a current price; get a quote. Whether you need PSVAR depends on the work: scheduled and some contracted services require it, private hire generally does not.
Do minibus prices include VAT?
On the minibus side, no — and unusually clearly. All 31 of the dealer listings we worked from were explicitly marked "+ VAT", which makes that half of the market easy to budget. On the coach side it is murkier: two of the sources we looked at do not state their VAT treatment at all, so a coach price may or may not include it. At 20%, on a £180,000 coach that is a £36,000 question. Ask before you assume. On a finance agreement the funder normally advances the ex-VAT price while the VAT falls due separately and up front.
Can you finance a minibus or coach?
Yes, and it is the normal route for both. Hire purchase over two to seven years is common, so the business owns the vehicle at the end. Lenders look at the vehicle’s age and expected residual value alongside your accounts, and for passenger vehicles they will usually want to see that the operator licence is in place or in progress — which loops back to the financial standing requirement above. Accessible and PSVAR-compliant vehicles tend to hold value well, which can help the terms. All finance is subject to status, affordability and lender approval.
