Blast chiller finance

Blast chillers are bought for food safety and kept for the margin, because cooking ahead safely is what lets a small brigade serve a big room.

Can you finance a blast chiller?

Yes, and blast chillers are one of the easier catering assets to fund. They are self-contained, branded, serial numbered and wanted on the used market, so funders treat them as genuine hard security rather than soft kitchen kit. Hire purchase is the usual structure and reconditioned units from dealers are fundable. The practical thing that catches buyers out is access: a large roll-in Irinox or Foster may not fit through the kitchen door, and the cost of removing a window or a wall section to get it in is builders’ work that will not sit on the agreement.

Used kit: Yes. Reconditioned blast chillers are a well-established market and funders accept them readily, provided a dealer has serviced the refrigeration system and can supply the serial number and a warranty.

What would a blast chiller cost per month?

Business asset finance is quoted on a flat rate, so that is what this shows — with the equivalent APR underneath, because the two are not the same number. A quick guide only; your actual rate depends on the asset, term, deposit and lender.

Representative example: on Hire Purchase, borrowing £25,000 over 48 months at a 6.0% flat rate (equivalent to 11.5% APR representative), you would repay around £646 a month; total amount repayable approximately £31,000, of which £6,000 is the cost of finance. This calculator is for illustration only — it is not a quote or an offer of finance, and the rate and repayments you are offered will depend on the asset, term, deposit and your circumstances. How lenders treat it

This is one of the few hospitality purchases where the equipment genuinely helps the application. A Williams or Foster blast chiller holds its value, dealers buy them, and a funder can picture recovering one, which is more than can be said for the canopy or the fit-out. Expect the usual sector caution nonetheless: hospitality carries a risk loading, and the underwriting still runs on filed accounts, bank conduct and time trading. New-start venues remain hard. The soft element is small here compared with most kitchen projects, which is a real advantage — a blast chiller invoice is mostly recoverable equipment rather than installation, so more of what you are buying is genuinely fundable.

Who buys one

Banqueting and conference hotels cooking ahead for large covers, contract and event caterers working to HACCP documentation, gastropubs running a cook-chill system to cover thin staffing, and bakeries and patisseries freezing at production speed. The trigger is nearly always a documented food safety requirement or an audit, closely followed by kitchens that have realised they cannot serve two hundred covers to order with the brigade they can actually recruit.

How it is treated for tax

Bought on hire purchase, business plant and machinery normally qualifies for capital allowances on the full cost even though you pay for it monthly, which is a large part of why hire purchase is the common structure. On a finance lease you generally set the rentals against profit instead. The rules change between budgets and your position depends on how you trade, so treat this as the direction of travel and get your accountant to confirm the detail before you commit.

Blast chiller finance questions

Do I need a blast chiller to satisfy environmental health?

Not automatically, but if you cook ahead and chill, your safe method has to bring food through the danger zone quickly and you need records to prove it. A blast chiller does that reliably and prints the evidence. Many operators buy one after an inspection or an audit raises questions about how they are cooling large batches.

Is a roll-in blast chiller harder to finance than a reach-in cabinet?

No, and the larger machine is often easier because the value clears the funder’s minimum comfortably and roll-in units from Irinox or Electrolux hold their price. The harder part is physical rather than financial: check the delivery route, the door widths and the floor before you order, because access problems create costs finance will not cover.

Can I fund a blast chiller and a walk-in freezer at the same time?

Yes, and it makes a strong schedule. The blast chiller is hard security and the freezer room is part hard, part fixture, so the two balance each other from an underwriting perspective. One facility covering both is usually easier to place than the freezer room on its own and leaves you with a single payment.

Does a blast chiller need special installation?

Less than most refrigeration. Self-contained cabinets plug in and need only clear ventilation space and a drain; remote versions need a condenser and pipework. That low installation content is one reason funders like them, because nearly the whole invoice is equipment they could recover rather than labour they could not.

Will the finance cover a service plan with the machine?

Sometimes, if the supplier includes it on the same invoice and it is a fixed-term plan rather than an open-ended subscription. Funders will generally allow a modest maintenance element alongside a strong asset. Ongoing monthly service contracts billed separately are running costs and belong in your overheads, not on an asset agreement.
