Chargrill finance

A charcoal oven changes what a menu can charge for, which is why so many restaurants find room for one during a refit they had already budgeted.

Can you finance a chargrill?

Yes. Chargrills and charcoal ovens are funded as equipment on hire purchase or lease, and premium units such as a Josper or a Synergy Grill are attractive to funders because they are expensive, branded and genuinely wanted second-hand. Used units are fundable from dealers. The complication is the flue. A Josper needs its own dedicated flue run, often through several floors, and that is structural work on the building rather than equipment, so it is quoted separately and usually paid for outside the finance agreement.

Used kit: Yes, and a used Josper in good order is one of the easier second-hand catering assets to fund, provided it comes through a dealer with the grates and internals intact.

What would a chargrill cost per month?

Business asset finance is quoted on a flat rate, so that is what this shows — with the equivalent APR underneath, because the two are not the same number. A quick guide only; your actual rate depends on the asset, term, deposit and lender.

Representative example: on Hire Purchase, borrowing £25,000 over 48 months at a 6.0% flat rate (equivalent to 11.5% APR representative), you would repay around £646 a month; total amount repayable approximately £31,000, of which £6,000 is the cost of finance. This calculator is for illustration only — it is not a quote or an offer of finance, and the rate and repayments you are offered will depend on the asset, term, deposit and your circumstances. How lenders treat it

A Josper or Archway is one of the few catering assets a funder is pleased to see, because there is a queue of buyers for a used one and the brand name means something at auction. Synergy and Falcon chargrill modules are fine too. Against that, hospitality remains a cautious sector, restaurants fail at a rate underwriters watch closely, and a new-start operator will find it hard to fund a premium grill without a personal guarantee. The flue is the real underwriting issue. Installation, ducting and fire-rated riser work can easily match the cost of the oven, none of it is recoverable, and funders will either exclude it or want the business strong enough that the equipment security is beside the point.

Who buys one

Steak restaurants, Mediterranean and Latin American kitchens, and gastropubs repositioning the menu upward. The buyer is typically an established operator doing a refit rather than a start-up, partly because the flue makes it a project rather than a delivery. Hotels add them for a grill concept in the restaurant. The trigger is competitive: a nearby site opens with a charcoal oven, covers drift, and the kitchen needs the same cooking method to hold its price point.

How it is treated for tax

Bought on hire purchase, business plant and machinery normally qualifies for capital allowances on the full cost even though you pay for it monthly, which is a large part of why hire purchase is the common structure. On a finance lease you generally set the rentals against profit instead. The rules change between budgets and your position depends on how you trade, so treat this as the direction of travel and get your accountant to confirm the detail before you commit.

Chargrill finance questions

Can I include the Josper flue installation in the finance?

Usually not in full. A dedicated flue is fire-rated ductwork built into the fabric of the building and cannot be recovered, so most funders leave it out. If your accounts are strong and the oven is the larger part of the invoice, some will absorb a share of installation. Assume the flue is a cash cost when you budget.

Do I need landlord consent before financing a charcoal oven?

For the flue, almost certainly, and it is worth resolving before you order anything. The finance itself does not need the landlord, but a funder on a larger facility may ask for a waiver confirming the equipment stays yours. The bigger risk is ordering an oven you then cannot flue because consent is refused.

Is a gas chargrill easier to finance than a charcoal oven?

Slightly different rather than easier. A gas chargrill module slots into a cookline with no dedicated flue, so the invoice is cleaner and more of it is fundable equipment. A charcoal oven is worth more second-hand and therefore better security, but it drags expensive installation along with it. Both are routinely funded.

Can a new restaurant finance a chargrill before it opens?

It is possible but it will be underwritten on you, not the restaurant. Expect a personal guarantee, questions about previous operating experience and a look at how the rest of the fit-out is being paid for. Funders are wary of writing premium equipment into a site that has never taken a booking, so bring a complete picture.

How is a chargrill treated at the end of a hire purchase agreement?

You own it once the final payment and the option fee clear, and it becomes a company asset on your balance sheet. Chargrills last a long time with new grates and burners, so most operators keep them well beyond the agreement. If you later close or refit, a used Josper or Synergy sells readily through catering dealers.
