Coffee grinder finance

The grinder does more for the cup than the machine does, which is why serious bars spend properly on it and casual ones wonder why the coffee is inconsistent.

Can you finance a coffee grinder?

Yes, though rarely on its own. A commercial grinder is a fundable asset but a low-value one, so it almost always goes on the same schedule as the espresso machine or a wider bar package. Used grinders are fundable from specialist dealers. The detail that matters is burr condition: a grinder sold cheaply with worn burrs will grind badly and needs an immediate spend, so funders and buyers alike want evidence of a service from a supplier who knows the machine.

Used kit: Yes, and the used grinder market is active, though funders want burrs, motor and dosing mechanism checked and warranted by a specialist rather than a general dealer.

What would a coffee grinder cost per month?

Business asset finance is quoted on a flat rate, so that is what this shows — with the equivalent APR underneath, because the two are not the same number. A quick guide only; your actual rate depends on the asset, term, deposit and lender.

Representative example: on Hire Purchase, borrowing £25,000 over 48 months at a 6.0% flat rate (equivalent to 11.5% APR representative), you would repay around £646 a month; total amount repayable approximately £31,000, of which £6,000 is the cost of finance. This calculator is for illustration only — it is not a quote or an offer of finance, and the rate and repayments you are offered will depend on the asset, term, deposit and your circumstances. How lenders treat it

Grinders are recognised, serial numbered and hold value in the speciality trade, particularly Mahlkonig and Mazzer, so as an asset they are perfectly acceptable. The problem is simply size: most grinders fall well under the minimum facility a funder will write, so the deal has to be bundled. Within a bar package alongside an espresso machine, filtration and a knock box, they pass without comment. The wider hospitality picture is unchanged — coffee businesses are underwritten on trading history, accounts and bank conduct, with guarantees expected from newer operators. If you genuinely only need a grinder, an unsecured business loan is usually the faster and more sensible route.

Who buys one

Speciality coffee shops running separate grinders for espresso and filter, high-volume sites adding a second espresso grinder so decaf does not hold up the bar, and hotels and restaurants upgrading a grinder that is throttling an otherwise decent machine. The trigger is usually a roaster or a head barista pointing out that the grinder, not the espresso machine, is the reason shots keep drifting through the day.

How it is treated for tax

Bought on hire purchase, business plant and machinery normally qualifies for capital allowances on the full cost even though you pay for it monthly, which is a large part of why hire purchase is the common structure. On a finance lease you generally set the rentals against profit instead. The rules change between budgets and your position depends on how you trade, so treat this as the direction of travel and get your accountant to confirm the detail before you commit.

Coffee grinder finance questions

Can I finance a grinder by itself?

Usually not, because the amount falls below the minimum a funder will underwrite. The cost of the credit search, documentation and payout does not change with the size of the deal, so small tickets are uneconomic. Add the grinder to an espresso machine order, or use a small business loan if it really is a standalone purchase.

Should I fund two grinders or one?

If you sell any volume of decaf or run a second blend, two grinders stop your bar from grinding to a halt at the worst moment and improve consistency. From a funding view two grinders on one schedule is easier to place than one, because the facility is larger. Specify what the bar actually needs rather than what fits a cash budget.

Do grinder burrs need replacing, and is that fundable?

Burrs wear and need replacing periodically depending on volume, and that is a maintenance cost rather than an asset, so it belongs in your running costs. Where a supplier includes a fresh set of burrs in a refurbished grinder on the original invoice, it forms part of the equipment being funded.

Is a filter or batch brew grinder funded the same way?

Yes, on exactly the same basis. A batch brew grinder or an EK-style all-purpose grinder is a branded, serial-numbered asset with a used market, and the same minimum-facility issue applies. Most speciality shops fund the espresso machine, espresso grinder and filter grinder together on one schedule.

Can I add a grinder to an espresso machine agreement later?

Once documents are signed the schedule lists specific assets, so adding one afterwards means a variation or a second agreement. It is far cleaner to decide your full bar setup before the paperwork is drawn. If you are still specifying, tell us the whole list and we will size the facility to cover it.
