Cost guide

How much does a grain silo cost in the UK?

Four real UK prices — and the arithmetic that shows why buying the small one is usually the expensive decision.

The short answer

A new fibreglass silo runs £3,900 at 4 tonne, £4,300 at 7 tonne and £4,600 at 10 tonne. A small used bin can be had for around £1,250.

Our sample is small and we would rather say so: four prices, three of them from one manufacturer’s published range. What makes that worth publishing is below.

UK grain silo prices

Four UK prices retrieved on 28 October 2026. Three are a single manufacturer’s published new-range prices, which is unusual in this sector and is what makes the comparison in the next section possible.

Price per tonne more than halves as the silo gets bigger

Because one maker publishes its whole range, we can do something you usually cannot on farm kit: compare the same product at three sizes and work out what the storage actually costs.

One manufacturer’s published fibreglass range. The £/tonne column is our arithmetic, not a published figure.
ItemPublished price
4 tonne silo (6m³)£3,900.00 — £975 per tonne
7 tonne silo (SS10)£4,300.00 — £614 per tonne
10 tonne silo (SS15)£4,600.00 — £460 per tonne

Read the top row against the bottom one. Going from 4 tonne to 10 tonne is two and a half times the storage for 18% more money — £3,900 to £4,600. Per tonne stored, the big silo costs £460 against the small one’s £975.

That is the opposite of how most equipment prices behave, and it is a straightforward consequence of construction: a large share of the cost is the structure, the discharge gear and getting it delivered and stood up, none of which scales with volume the way the shell does.

So the question is not “what is the cheapest silo” but “what will I wish I had bought in five years”. If there is any prospect of needing more capacity, the cost of buying it now is remarkably small, and the cost of buying a second small silo later is close to the price of having bought the big one.

One honest caveat on this arithmetic

The £/tonne figures are ours, calculated from the published prices in the row above them. No supplier published them. They also compare one maker’s own range, which controls for brand and construction but means the pattern is demonstrated on three products rather than across the market. We think it is sound and useful; it is not a market-wide law.

The costs that are not in the price

  • The base it stands on. A full 10 tonne silo is a serious point load. The 10 tonne unit in our table is quoted with a galvanised steel support structure, but the concrete it sits on is yours, and on soft ground that is a groundworks job.
  • Erection and delivery. These arrive to be stood up, not plugged in. Neither supplier publishes a figure for it, so we are not going to guess — but ask for it as a line on the quote rather than assuming it is included.
  • Discharge gear. One listing specifies manual centre discharge. Augers, conveyors and anything automated are separate purchases, and they are often what turns a silo into a working feed system.
  • Fibreglass or steel. The new prices here are GRP. Galvanised steel is a different market with different lifespans and condensation behaviour, and we found nothing citable for it, so this page does not compare the two on price.
  • VAT, unstated. None of these four listings states a VAT position. At 20% a £4,600 silo is £920 more than it looks.

What would it cost a month?

Put the installed cost in, not just the silo — base and erection included — since that is what you are actually funding. The calculator quotes a flat rate with the equivalent APR beside it.

Representative example: on Hire Purchase, borrowing £10,000 over 48 months at a 5.15% flat rate (equivalent to 9.9% APR representative), you would repay around £251 a month; total amount repayable approximately £12,060, of which £2,060 is the cost of finance. Common questions

How much does a grain silo cost in the UK?

From UK supplier prices retrieved in October 2026, a new fibreglass silo is £3,900 at 4 tonne, £4,300 at 7 tonne and £4,600 at 10 tonne. A small used grain bin — a 2 tonne tote with an opening bottom — was advertised at £1,250. Our sample is four prices, three of them from one manufacturer’s published range, so treat these as well-sourced for small fibreglass silos and not as a guide to farm-scale steel storage. None of the listings states whether VAT is included.

Is a bigger silo better value?

On the published prices, markedly so. Moving from the 4 tonne unit at £3,900 to the 10 tonne at £4,600 is two and a half times the capacity for 18% more money. Per tonne of storage that is £975 against £460, so the small silo costs more than twice as much per tonne stored. The reason is that much of the cost is the support structure, the discharge arrangement and getting the thing delivered and erected, and none of that scales with volume. Those per-tonne figures are our arithmetic from the published prices rather than anything a supplier published, and they compare one maker’s own range.

What else do I need to budget for besides the silo?

The base, the erection and the discharge gear, none of which the headline price includes. A full 10 tonne silo is a concentrated point load, so it needs a concrete base capable of taking it — the 10 tonne unit we priced comes with a galvanised steel support structure but not the groundworks under it. Erection and delivery are not published by either supplier we used, so get them quoted as separate lines. Augers and conveyors are separate again. We deliberately do not publish figures for any of these because we could not source reliable UK ones.

Can grain storage be financed?

Yes, and it is a normal asset finance conversation. The usual structure is hire purchase over a term matched to the life of the equipment, with the installed cost funded rather than just the silo itself. Terms typically run 12 to 72 months with most agreements between 24 and 60. Because storage tends to be bought alongside handling equipment, it is often worth funding the whole installation as one agreement rather than piecemeal. Equipment bought for a farm business is normally unregulated business lending, and tax treatment is a matter for your accountant.

Prices on this page are third-party published asking and list prices, attributed to their sources and correct at the date of retrieval; they are indicative, are not sold prices, and are not a quote or an offer of finance. VAT basis is stated per row because the sources differ. All finance is subject to status, affordability and lender approval. Tax and VAT treatment depends on your circumstances and is a matter for your accountant.
