Can you finance an industrial sewing machine?

Yes, though how it is funded depends on how many you are buying. A single industrial sewing machine is often below the value a funder will write on its own, so machines are typically financed as a package — a line of lockstitch, overlock and bartack machines together, with their tables and motors, on one agreement. Used machines are fundable and the good brands last decades. The thing to get right is the invoice: one supplier quoting the whole workroom is far easier to fund than six separate purchases.

Used kit: Yes — used industrial machines fund well as part of a package, and heads of fifteen years or more are acceptable given how long these brands last.

What would an industrial sewing machine cost per month?

Business asset finance is quoted on a flat rate, so that is what this shows — with the equivalent APR underneath, because the two are not the same number. A quick guide only; your actual rate depends on the asset, term, deposit and lender.

Representative example: on Hire Purchase, borrowing £25,000 over 48 months at a 6.0% flat rate (equivalent to 11.5% APR representative), you would repay around £646 a month; total amount repayable approximately £31,000, of which £6,000 is the cost of finance. This calculator is for illustration only — it is not a quote or an offer of finance, and the rate and repayments you are offered will depend on the asset, term, deposit and your circumstances. How lenders treat it

Individually these machines are modest assets, but collectively they are respectable security: the leading Japanese and German brands hold value, spares are widely available and used dealers move stock constantly. Heads, tables, stands and servo motors quoted together are treated as one asset per station. Needles, thread, feet, folders and binders are consumables and tooling, never funded. The machines are plugged in rather than installed, so nothing becomes a fixture and tenants are unaffected. The main friction is ticket size: expect a funder to want the whole workroom on one quotation. Declines usually reflect a business with a very short trading history rather than anything about the equipment.

Who buys one

Usually a small UK manufacturer, upholsterer or technical textiles firm expanding a workroom, often after onshoring work that used to come from overseas. Also marine and canvas trimmers moving to heavy walking foot machines for webbing and PVC, and contract sewing businesses replacing clutch motor machines with servo units to cut electricity use and noise.

How it is treated for tax

Bought on hire purchase, business plant and machinery normally qualifies for capital allowances on the full cost even though you pay for it monthly, which is a large part of why hire purchase is the common structure. On a finance lease you generally set the rentals against profit instead. The rules change between budgets and your position depends on how you trade, so treat this as the direction of travel and get your accountant to confirm the detail before you commit.

Industrial sewing machine finance questions

Can I finance just one sewing machine?

Sometimes, but often not economically. Most single industrial heads fall under the minimum agreement a funder will write. Buying several at once, or adding a cutter or press to the order, lifts the total to a workable level and gives you one payment for the lot.

Do the tables and motors count separately?

No, they are treated as part of the station. A head, table, stand and servo motor quoted together form one machine for funding purposes. That is helpful, because the complete station carries a better resale value than a bare head on its own.

Is second-hand a sensible route for a workroom?

Very often yes, and funders are comfortable with it. A serviced used machine from a specialist dealer can cost considerably less than new and still run for years. Ask for a dealer warranty, since that is what makes an underwriter relaxed about the age.

What about specialist machines like bartacks and buttonholers?

They fund the same way, as part of a package. Highly specialised machines have a narrower resale market, which a funder will factor in, so it helps if the bulk of the order is made up of mainstream lockstitch and overlock machines with broad demand.

Can a start-up manufacturer get a workroom funded?

It is possible where the directors have real experience in the trade and there is evidence of confirmed work. Expect a personal guarantee and expect the underwriter to look closely at the business plan. We would approach lenders who are comfortable with newly formed companies from the start.
