Can you finance a quad bike and ATV?

Yes, provided it is a business machine rather than a recreational one. Utility quads and side-by-side UTVs used for farm work are funded on hire purchase in the business name. The obstacle is value: a single quad is a small purchase and a number of funders will not write an agreement at that level, so it is often funded alongside a trailer, sprayer unit or other kit on one invoice. Expect the funder to ask for the frame and engine numbers and CESAR registration, because quads are among the most stolen items on a farm.

Used kit: Yes, though low-value used machines can fall below funder minimums

What would a quad bike and ATV cost per month?

Business asset finance is quoted on a flat rate, so that is what this shows — with the equivalent APR underneath, because the two are not the same number. A quick guide only; your actual rate depends on the asset, term, deposit and lender.

Representative example: on Hire Purchase, borrowing £25,000 over 48 months at a 6.0% flat rate (equivalent to 11.5% APR representative), you would repay around £646 a month; total amount repayable approximately £31,000, of which £6,000 is the cost of finance. This calculator is for illustration only — it is not a quote or an offer of finance, and the rate and repayments you are offered will depend on the asset, term, deposit and your circumstances. How lenders treat it

Quads and UTVs are low-value, high-theft assets, which shapes how funders look at them. They resell easily, with demand from farms, estates, groundscare and leisure buyers, so recovery value is not the concern. The concerns are ticket size and security. Many funders apply a minimum below which the deal is uneconomic, so bundling with other equipment on one invoice is the usual fix. Underwriters will want CESAR marking or at least recorded frame and engine numbers, and will expect the machine to be insured and housed securely. Side-by-side UTVs carry more value than a quad, which makes them easier to fund standalone. If the machine is to be used on the road it needs registering and taxing appropriately, and a funder will assume that is in hand.

Who buys one

Hill and lowland sheep farms checking stock and carrying feed blocks, beef units fencing and moving water troughs, and estates and shoots using UTVs to carry people and equipment. The trigger is usually the old machine becoming unreliable a long way from the yard, a move to carrying more with a side-by-side rather than a quad, or an insurer or safety review prompting a change after an incident.

How it is treated for tax

Bought on hire purchase, business plant and machinery normally qualifies for capital allowances on the full cost even though you pay for it monthly, which is a large part of why hire purchase is the common structure. On a finance lease you generally set the rentals against profit instead. The rules change between budgets and your position depends on how you trade, so treat this as the direction of travel and get your accountant to confirm the detail before you commit.

Quad bike and ATV finance questions

Can I finance a quad bike on its own?

Sometimes, but many funders set a minimum deal size that a single quad falls below. The straightforward answer is to buy it alongside something else from the same dealer and have it invoiced together, or to look at a side-by-side UTV where the higher value makes a standalone agreement viable.

Is a UTV easier to finance than a quad?

Generally yes. A side-by-side carries a higher value, which takes it above funder minimums, and it is unambiguously a work vehicle with a load bed and seating. Quads sit closer to the line between business and recreational use, which occasionally prompts extra questions.

Do I need the machine registered for road use?

Only if you intend to use it on the road, but if you do, it must be registered, taxed and insured properly and the rider licensed. Funders do not usually make it a condition of the agreement, but an unregistered machine that cannot legally leave the farm is worth less if it ever has to be sold.

What do lenders want because of quad theft?

Recorded frame and engine numbers, and ideally CESAR marking or a tracker. Quads and UTVs are stolen in large numbers and funders know it. Having the machine security marked and stored in a locked building helps the insurance as much as the finance, and insurers increasingly ask the same questions.

Can attachments and accessories be included?

Yes, if they are on the same invoice. Sprayers, spreaders, trailers, cabs and carriers bought with the machine can all be funded together, and including them actually helps by lifting the deal above any minimum. Buying accessories later from another supplier means they fall outside the agreement.
