Dust extraction and LEV finance

Wood dust is a regulated carcinogen and extraction is not optional, but it is the part of a workshop project that is most often left out of the funding.

Can you finance a dust extraction and LEV?

Yes, with one important caveat: extraction funds far more easily when it goes on the same invoice as the machine it serves. A standalone filter unit or run of ducting is low value, partly fixed to the building and hard to recover, so on its own it sits with soft asset funders. Bundled with a saw, a CNC or a moulder it simply becomes part of a hard asset package and goes through without comment. Larger installations with silos, cyclones and a briquetter are fundable as a project, but the ducting and structural work need separating from the plant.

Used kit: Yes, used filter units and cyclones are fundable, usually bundled with the machine they serve

What would a dust extraction and LEV cost per month?

Business asset finance is quoted on a flat rate, so that is what this shows — with the equivalent APR underneath, because the two are not the same number. A quick guide only; your actual rate depends on the asset, term, deposit and lender.

Representative example: on Hire Purchase, borrowing £25,000 over 48 months at a 6.0% flat rate (equivalent to 11.5% APR representative), you would repay around £646 a month; total amount repayable approximately £31,000, of which £6,000 is the cost of finance. This calculator is for illustration only — it is not a quote or an offer of finance, and the rate and repayments you are offered will depend on the asset, term, deposit and your circumstances. How lenders treat it

Extraction is the classic soft asset problem. Ducting is cut to fit your building and worth scrap once removed, filter units have some value but a thin resale market, and silos are usually planted on a concrete base outside. Underwriters know this, so a standalone application is assessed almost entirely on your covenant and tends to land with soft asset or unsecured lenders. The far better route is to attach the extraction to the machine purchase, where it rides along with equipment the funder is comfortable recovering. For larger installations, ask the supplier to split the quote between plant, which is the fan set, filter, cyclone and briquetter, and installation, which is the ducting and steelwork. That one change can transform what a funder will advance.

Who buys one

Any workshop that has added a machine the existing extractor cannot cope with, which in practice means anyone who has just bought a nesting CNC, a wide belt sander or a four-sider. The other trigger is enforcement: an HSE visit, an insurance inspection or a failed LEV test under the fourteen-month examination requirement. Shops also invest when waste disposal costs make a briquetter worth having.

How it is treated for tax

Bought on hire purchase, business plant and machinery normally qualifies for capital allowances on the full cost even though you pay for it monthly, which is a large part of why hire purchase is the common structure. On a finance lease you generally set the rentals against profit instead. The rules change between budgets and your position depends on how you trade, so treat this as the direction of travel and get your accountant to confirm the detail before you commit.

Dust extraction and LEV finance questions

Can I finance dust extraction on its own?

You can, but it is the hardest way to do it. On its own an extraction system is a soft asset with poor recovery value, so the decision rests on your accounts and credit rather than the equipment. If you are buying any machine at the same time, putting the extraction on that invoice is faster, easier and usually cheaper.

Does LEV testing come under the finance?

No. The statutory thorough examination and test is a recurring service, not an asset, so it cannot sit in an equipment agreement. Budget for it separately as an ongoing cost. Some suppliers include a first test with a new installation, and where that is part of the machine invoice it is not an issue.

Can I finance a wood waste briquetter or heater?

Yes, and these place better than plain ducting because a briquetting press or waste heater is identifiable plant with resale value. Where the heater is plumbed into the building it starts to look like a fixture, so the same landlord questions can arise. Present it as plant on the invoice, with the installation costed separately.

Will a funder pay for ducting and installation?

Some will, within a sensible proportion of the total. Ducting has effectively no recovery value, so an invoice that is mostly installation labour will be questioned. Ask the supplier to itemise plant and installation separately. That lets a funder advance fully against the plant and take a view on the rest, rather than discounting the whole quote.

How do I fund extraction for a whole new workshop?

Treat it as a project rather than a purchase. A full system with a silo, cyclone, fan set and ducting across a new unit can be structured as one facility, usually alongside the machinery going into the same building. Bring us in before the supplier quote is finalised so it can be itemised in a way funders can work with.
