Four sider and moulder finance

A four-sided moulder takes sawn timber to a finished profile in one pass, and it is bought when hand-fed machining stops keeping up with the order book.

Can you finance a four sider and moulder?

Yes, and four-siders are among the best-regarded assets in woodworking finance. A Weinig, SCM or Leadermac moulder is written as a hard asset on hire purchase or finance lease, and used machines fund comfortably at twenty years and beyond because demand from timber merchants, joinery shops and pallet makers never disappears. The catch is the tooling and grinding side. A moulder is only as good as the cutterheads and the knife grinder feeding it, and that equipment is often quoted separately. Get the grinder on the same order, because funding a Rondamat on its own afterwards is awkward and unnecessarily expensive.

What would a four sider and moulder cost per month?

Business asset finance is quoted on a flat rate, so that is what this shows — with the equivalent APR underneath, because the two are not the same number. A quick guide only; your actual rate depends on the asset, term, deposit and lender.

Representative example: on Hire Purchase, borrowing £25,000 over 48 months at a 6.0% flat rate (equivalent to 11.5% APR representative), you would repay around £646 a month; total amount repayable approximately £31,000, of which £6,000 is the cost of finance. This calculator is for illustration only — it is not a quote or an offer of finance, and the rate and repayments you are offered will depend on the asset, term, deposit and your circumstances. How lenders treat it

Funders regard Weinig in particular as blue-chip security. The machines are enormously heavy, serial-numbered, exported readily and still command real money after two decades, so underwriters can see a genuine exit and will take a longer view on age than almost any other woodworking asset. That puts these deals with mainstream bank-owned lessors as well as specialist funders. Larger multi-spindle machines with automatic setting move into full-underwriting territory. The problems come from scope rather than the asset: a quote heavy with tooling, a spares package and a year of grinding wheels dilutes the security. Separate the moulder, the grinder and the consumables into their proper places and the case reads far better to an underwriter.

Who buys one

Timber merchants with a machining department, joinery manufacturers producing skirting, architrave and cladding, and flooring or decking producers. The trigger is volume: hand feeding a planer and moulder separately cannot meet the delivery dates, or a contract for a specific profile has been won. Businesses bringing machining back in house after years of buying finished profiles are the other common buyer.

How it is treated for tax

Bought on hire purchase, business plant and machinery normally qualifies for capital allowances on the full cost even though you pay for it monthly, which is a large part of why hire purchase is the common structure. On a finance lease you generally set the rentals against profit instead. The rules change between budgets and your position depends on how you trade, so treat this as the direction of travel and get your accountant to confirm the detail before you commit.

Four sider and moulder finance questions

Can I finance a knife grinder with the moulder?

Yes, and you should. A Rondamat or equivalent profile grinder is a capital machine in its own right and funds well when it appears on the same order as the moulder. Bought six months later it becomes a standalone deal for a fraction of the value, which is the most expensive way to acquire it. Plan the tooling room at the same time as the moulder.

How old a Weinig can I put on finance?

Older than you would expect. Twenty-year-old Powermat and Unimat machines are funded regularly because they still sell readily and still work. The questions will be about spindle condition, whether the feed rollers and bed have been maintained and who refurbished it. A machine sold through a specialist dealer with a warranty is easier than a direct import.

Is a moulder classed as hard or soft asset?

Firmly hard. It is heavy, identifiable, has an international second-hand market and does not become part of the building. That is the best category to be in for pricing and for the willingness of funders to look at the case. It also means age matters far less than it would on an electronics-led machine.

Can I refinance an existing moulder to free up cash?

Usually yes, where you own it outright with no agreement against it. A Weinig sitting on your floor represents real value and refinance releases some of it, typically to fund another machine or to ease working capital. The funder will want the original invoice, evidence of clear title and normally an inspection or a full set of photographs.

What about the extraction for a four-sider?

A moulder generates a very high volume of chip and shaving, so the extraction is not an afterthought. Filter units, ducting and often a silo or briquetter get specified with the machine. Where the supplier includes them in the project quote they fund as part of the package. Fixed silos and building-mounted plant are the part that needs more careful structuring.
