Spray booth finance

Bringing finishing in house changes the economics of a joinery business, but a spray booth funds differently to the machines around it.

Can you finance a spray booth?

Yes, though a spray booth is assessed differently to a saw or a CNC. Once installed it is bolted to the floor, ducted through the roof and effectively part of the building, so funders treat it as a soft or semi-fixed asset with limited recovery value. That does not stop it being funded — it means the decision leans on your trading history and covenant rather than the kit. Booths are commonly funded alongside a sander or a CNC so a hard asset sits in the same agreement. If you lease your unit, expect the funder to want a landlord waiver.

Used kit: Rarely as a standalone used purchase; relocated booths are usually funded as part of a wider project

What would a spray booth cost per month?

Business asset finance is quoted on a flat rate, so that is what this shows — with the equivalent APR underneath, because the two are not the same number. A quick guide only; your actual rate depends on the asset, term, deposit and lender.

Representative example: on Hire Purchase, borrowing £25,000 over 48 months at a 6.0% flat rate (equivalent to 11.5% APR representative), you would repay around £646 a month; total amount repayable approximately £31,000, of which £6,000 is the cost of finance. This calculator is for illustration only — it is not a quote or an offer of finance, and the rate and repayments you are offered will depend on the asset, term, deposit and your circumstances. How lenders treat it

This is where a broker earns the fee. A dry filter booth, extraction plenum, make-up air unit and drying room become fixtures once installed, and a funder cannot lift a fixture out of your landlord building and sell it. So the case is underwritten on the business, not the asset: filed accounts, trading history, director guarantee and often a deposit. Two structures work well. One is to place the booth inside a larger agreement alongside genuinely recoverable machinery. The other is to use funders who write soft asset and unsecured facilities where the security is the covenant. Free-standing modular booths that can be dismantled are meaningfully easier than a fully built-in installation, so it is worth asking the supplier which you are buying.

Who buys one

Joinery, kitchen and furniture businesses that are paying a specialist sprayer and watching both the margin and the lead time suffer. The trigger is usually a contract with a specified colour or lacquer system, or a run of returns caused by finishing done on site. Shops that have just installed a wide belt sander are the other classic buyer, because sanding and spraying only make sense together.

How it is treated for tax

Bought on hire purchase, business plant and machinery normally qualifies for capital allowances on the full cost even though you pay for it monthly, which is a large part of why hire purchase is the common structure. On a finance lease you generally set the rentals against profit instead. The rules change between budgets and your position depends on how you trade, so treat this as the direction of travel and get your accountant to confirm the detail before you commit.

Spray booth finance questions

Can you finance a spray booth in a rented unit?

Yes, but the landlord usually has to be involved. Because the booth becomes a fixture, a funder will often want a written waiver confirming the landlord makes no claim over it. Most commercial landlords will sign. Raise it as soon as the quote is agreed, because chasing a waiver at the end is the single biggest cause of delay on these deals.

Is a spray booth a hard or soft asset?

Soft, or at best semi-fixed. It is installed into the building, the ducting is cut through the structure and it has very little second-hand value once removed. That means the funder is lending against your business rather than the booth. It is still fundable, the approach is simply different to funding a panel saw.

Can I finance the booth and the extraction together?

Yes. The booth, the filtration, the make-up air unit and the ducting are one system and should sit on one invoice. Splitting them creates small awkward applications for parts that are worth nothing individually. Where there is building work involved, keep that on a separate contractor invoice so it does not muddy the asset side.

Do I need planning or environmental consent first?

Often yes, and it is worth resolving before the finance completes. Solvent use can bring local authority permitting into play and roof-mounted extraction may need consent. A funder does not check this for you, but an installation you cannot legally run is a problem you own. Get the supplier to confirm what approvals apply.

What if I also need a compressor and air system?

Include it. Compressors, dryers and air receivers are recoverable equipment with genuine resale value, so adding them actually strengthens the overall proposal rather than weakening it. A booth funded alongside a compressor and a sander is a far more attractive package to an underwriter than a booth on its own.
