Choose the Transit if you want the widest dealer and independent garage network in the UK, the deepest used market and the cheapest routine parts. Choose the Sprinter if your van does high motorway mileage, carries heavy loads constantly, or wears a conversion you expect to keep for many years. Both are large vans; they suit different working patterns.

What kind of work each suits
The Transit is the default large van in Britain for a reason: parts are everywhere, most independent garages know it, and if you need one at short notice there is stock somewhere. That matters most if you run one or two vans and cannot absorb a week of downtime.
The Sprinter’s reputation is built on long-haul work. Operators doing high annual motorway mileage, or running the same van hard for six or seven years, tend to rate it. It is also the base for a large share of the UK’s box, tipper, dropside and welfare conversions, so if you need a specialist body the Sprinter chassis cab is often the path of least resistance.
If your week is urban multi-drop and tight yards, both work, but the deciding factor is usually the wheelbase and roof height you can physically park and manoeuvre — not the badge.
Payload and load space — for your job, not in general
Do not compare these vans on headline figures. Payload moves significantly between wheelbase, roof height, gross vehicle weight rating, engine and even trim and options, and it is the number most often discovered too late. A van that is legal empty can be overweight with two operatives, a full tank, a rack of tools and a day’s materials.
Do this instead: weigh, or realistically estimate, your heaviest working load including people, fuel, tools, racking, ply lining and any tail lift. Then check the payload of the exact variant, on the manufacturer’s current specification for a new van or on the V5C and plate of the specific used van. Check the manufacturer’s current specification for the exact wheelbase, roof height and GVW combination.
The same logic applies to load length and internal height. Measure the longest and tallest thing you carry regularly, add the racking you intend to fit, then check the specific variant against that. Load-through bulkhead options and side-door aperture width often matter more than total cubic capacity.
Running costs and what drives them
Fuel is driven far more by how and where you drive, and by how loaded the van is, than by the badge on the grille. The controllable differences are elsewhere:
- Routine parts and consumables. Transit parts are generally cheaper and more widely stocked, with a bigger pattern-part market. Mercedes parts and dealer labour typically sit higher.
- Servicing. Compare the actual manufacturer schedule for the engine you are buying, not a rule of thumb.
- Tyres. A heavier-rated van on larger commercial tyres costs more per set. Check the size and load rating on the variant.
- Insurance. Get real quotes on both, on your postcode, with your drivers and overnight parking. Group assumptions are unreliable for LCVs.
- Clean air zones. Confirm the compliance status of the specific engine and registration date if you work in a charging zone.
Servicing, parts and downtime
A van off the road is lost income, and for most small operators this outweighs every other running-cost difference. Before you commit, work out where the nearest dealer is for each, what their courtesy or replacement van arrangement actually is, and whether your local independent will touch it. The Transit usually wins on convenience of repair; the Sprinter network is smaller but geared to commercial users with longer opening hours at many sites.
Ask about lead times on the parts that strand a van — injectors, turbos, DPFs, AdBlue components, electronic modules. A cheap van with a four-week wait for a module is not cheap.
Residual values and how long you keep it
Both hold value reasonably in the UK, but they behave differently. High-mileage Sprinters retain a market because buyers accept motorway miles on them. Transits sell fastest across the widest range of condition and mileage because demand is broadest. Very high-spec or unusual variants of either are slower to shift than plain panel vans in white.
That feeds directly into the money. If you plan to keep the van until it is worn out, ownership matters more than resale, and hire purchase or a lease purchase gets you to outright ownership with a known end point. If you replace every three years and want the lowest committed monthly cost, contract hire or a finance lease keeps you flexible and puts residual risk on the funder rather than you. What to check on a used example
- Full service history with dated invoices, not just stamps, and evidence the correct schedule was followed.
- Signs of sustained overloading: sagging rear springs, inner-edge tyre wear, cracked or repaired rear body mounts.
- DPF and AdBlue system health, and any history of repeated regeneration faults.
- The plated GVW and payload on the V5C, matched against the work you actually do.
- Conversion work done properly and, if a tail lift is fitted, current thorough examination records.
- A finance, write-off and mileage check before you pay a deposit.
