Transit Custom vs Volkswagen Transporter: how to choose

Both are mid-size panel vans that do the same jobs, so the honest answer is that the decision usually comes down to cost of ownership and dealer convenience rather than capability. The Transit Custom generally has the wider network and cheaper parts; the Transporter has a strong following among trades who value how it drives and how it holds value.

CW Asset Finance is a broker, not a dealer. We arrange the funding whichever you pick, so we have no reason to steer you.

What kind of work each suits

This is the class most British trades actually live in — plumbers, electricians, joiners, mobile engineers, couriers running boxed goods. Both vans handle that. Where they diverge is at the edges.

The Transit Custom’s advantage is breadth: more variants, more trim levels, more crew-cab options in the used market, and a bigger pool of vans at any given budget. If you need something specific — a particular length, a crew van, a tipper conversion — you will usually find it in Custom form sooner.

The Transporter tends to be chosen by operators who spend a lot of hours in the seat, and by businesses where the van is customer-facing. Kombi and crew variants are popular for firms carrying a team plus kit.

Payload and load space for your job

Do not shop these on quoted figures. Payload and load dimensions in this class vary a lot between short and long wheelbase, between roof heights, between gross vehicle weight ratings, and between engine and trim. Two vans with the same name on the back can differ by a meaningful margin.

Work the other way round. Establish your heaviest realistic load — operatives, fuel, racking, ply lining, tools, materials — and your longest and bulkiest regular item. Then check those requirements against the exact variant, using the manufacturer’s current specification for new or the V5C and plate for used. Check the manufacturer’s current specification for the exact wheelbase, roof height and GVW.

Two practical points that matter more than volume in this class: whether the load bay takes the sheet material or ladder length you carry, with the bulkhead and any load-through hatch as they will actually be configured; and whether the side loading door aperture takes your widest item, because a lot of mid-size van frustration is about getting things in rather than fitting them once in.

Running costs and what drives them

  • Parts and labour. Transit Custom parts are typically cheaper and more widely stocked, with a larger pattern market. Volkswagen commercial parts and dealer labour usually sit higher, though the VW commercial network is set up for business users.
  • Servicing. Compare the actual manufacturer schedule for the engine you are buying, including any AdBlue and DPF-related items.
  • Fuel. Driven mainly by load, route and driver. Expect no meaningful badge-level difference on identical work.
  • Insurance and security. Both are theft targets and both cost real money to secure properly. Budget for deadlocks, slam locks and an alarm upgrade, and check what your insurer requires. Get quotes on the specific variant — LCV premiums vary more by postcode and overnight parking than by model.
  • Clean air zones. Confirm the compliance status of the exact engine and registration date if you work in a charging city.

Servicing, parts and downtime

For most small operators this is the deciding factor. Find out, for each: where the nearest commercial dealer is, whether they offer a replacement van, their booking lead time for a non-urgent service, and whether your trusted independent will work on it. Ford’s network density is a genuine practical advantage in most of the UK. VW’s commercial dealers are fewer but generally set up for business customers.

The parts that keep a van off the road are the electronic and emissions components, not brake pads. Ask about those specifically.

Residual values and what that means for your finance

Transporters have historically held value well and there is strong demand for clean, well-specified examples. Transit Customs sell in far greater volume, so they are easier and faster to move, across a wider range of condition. Neither position is automatically better for you — it depends on your plan.

If you intend to keep the van six years and run it until it is done, you want ownership and a repayment structure that ends. Hire purchase or lease purchase suits that, and the total cost of the agreement matters more than the monthly figure.

If you replace at three years, you are buying use, not the van. Contract hire or a finance lease can keep the monthly commitment lower and leave residual risk with the funder. A strong residual is worth more to you under an agreement that prices it in.

What to check on a used example

  • Dated service invoices, not just a stamped book, and cambelt or chain history where relevant.
  • Evidence of hard commercial life: heavily worn tyres, sagging rear suspension, repaired body mounts, a load floor beaten out of shape.
  • DPF, EGR and AdBlue history — repeated faults here are expensive and recurring.
  • Attempted break-in damage around the locks and door skins, and whether it was properly repaired.
  • The plated GVW and payload on the V5C against your real load.
  • Finance, write-off and mileage checks before any deposit changes hands.
