If your credit file is not clean, a horsebox is one of the better things to be buying. It is a tangible asset the lender can secure against, and a well-built box holds its value — which gives a funder something to work with that an unsecured loan never offers.
That does not make approval automatic, and nobody honest will tell you it does. What it does mean is that adverse credit is a conversation about how recent, how serious and what deposit — not an automatic no.
Why a horsebox funds better than unsecured borrowing
A coachbuilt box is not a depreciating consumable. The base vehicle behaves like a van, but the conversion does not, and a box from a respected maker can be worth more a decade on than the chassis alone would suggest. A lender who understands the equestrian market prices the finished article and holds real security against it. That security is what makes an adverse-credit case workable where an unsecured application would simply be scored out.
What lenders actually look at
- How recent it is. A default from four years ago is a very different conversation from one from four months ago. Time genuinely helps.
- Whether it is settled. A satisfied CCJ reads far better than an outstanding one, even at the same age.
- Affordability now. Current income and commitments carry more weight than history once the history is explained.
- Deposit. This is the lever you control. More deposit reduces the lender's exposure and widens the range of funders willing to look.
- The box itself. A sensible, saleable box supports the case. An unusual or heavily personalised build is harder to place.
Situations we place regularly
- CCJs, satisfied or outstanding
- Defaults and missed payments on previous agreements
- Discharged bankruptcy or a completed IVA
- A thin file — young, recently self-employed, or new to UK credit
- Declined elsewhere, often by a lender pricing the box as a plain van
What actually helps — and what does not
Stop applying repeatedly. This is the single most common self-inflicted problem we see. Every application leaves a hard search on your file, and a cluster of searches makes the next lender more cautious, not less. One properly placed application beats six speculative ones.
Know what is on your file before you start. Check it yourself. It is free, and it is far better to explain something up front than to have a lender find it.
Put a deposit together if you can. It moves the needle more than almost anything else on an adverse-credit case.
Be straight with us. We would rather tell you honestly that something is not placeable today, and what would change that, than waste your time and your credit file finding out the hard way.
Checking costs you nothing
Enquiring with us triggers no credit search. We can talk through what is realistic before anything touches your file. If it is not workable right now we will say so, and tell you what would need to change.

Common questions
Can I finance a horsebox with adverse credit?
Often yes. The box is tangible security, which helps. Lenders will weigh how recent the adverse credit is alongside affordability and deposit. We will tell you honestly what is realistic before applying.
Will enquiring damage my credit score?
No. Enquiring with us runs no credit search. A search only happens once you decide to proceed with a specific lender, and we will tell you before that point.
Does a bigger deposit really make a difference?
On an adverse-credit case, more than almost anything else. It reduces the lender's exposure and brings funders into play who would otherwise decline.
I have been declined already — is it worth trying again?
Usually yes, provided the next application is placed properly rather than fired at another automated form. Declines frequently come from lenders who price a coachbuilt box as a standard van. What is not worth doing is making several more applications yourself — each one leaves a hard search.
