How much does a curtainside trailer cost in the UK?
Twelve real UK listings — and the one option that nearly doubles the price of an older trailer.
A used tri-axle curtainsider runs roughly £4,995 to £9,750 for 2011 to 2017 stock, rising to £19,750 to £24,750 for 2021 and 2024 trailers. A tail-lift trailer is the exception to that pattern and is dealt with below.
None of the twelve listings states a VAT position. These are advertised asking prices.

A tail lift is worth more than two years and an extra axle
Three of these trailers come from the same dealer, which makes them directly comparable — same seller, same month, same market.
| Item | Published price |
|---|---|
| 2016 SDC, tri-axle, SAF drum axles, air suspension, ex-fleet — no tail lift | £7,995 |
| 2017 SDC, tri-axle, 39,000kg plated GVW, MOT Mar 2027 — no tail lift | £9,750 |
| 2015 SDC, TWO-axle tandem, rear steer, Dhollandia tuck-away tail lift | £14,750 |
Read the highlighted row against the two above it. The tail-lift trailer is a year older, has one axle fewer and therefore less payload — and it is £5,000 to £6,755 dearer. The 2021 trailer at £19,750 in the main table also has a Dhollandia lift, which supports the same reading.
That is not a quirk of one advert. A tail lift turns a trailer into one that can deliver anywhere without a forklift at the far end, which opens up work the cheaper trailer cannot take. The market prices the capability, not the steel.
So if you do not need a tail lift, the value in this table is obvious: a 2017 tri-axle with an MOT into 2027 at £9,750. If you do need one, budget for it as a step change rather than an option.
Ask for the tail lift’s own thorough examination certificate and its service history, not just the trailer’s MOT — it is lifting equipment in its own right and has its own inspection regime. Ask the capacity, because a tuck-away lift rated for one pallet weight is a different machine from one rated for another, and that determines what work you can actually take.
The costs that are not in the asking price
- Curtains. Several of these adverts specify XL-rated curtains, which tells you it is a distinguishing feature rather than standard. A curtain replacement on a trailer bought without load-rated curtains is a real cost, and on some loads XL rating is what makes the trailer legal for the job.
- Brakes: drums or discs. Most of this stock is on drums. Disc-braked trailers cost more to buy and less to maintain, and on a trailer doing high mileage that difference matters more than the purchase gap.
- MOT timing. Two of these adverts lead with an MOT into 2027. A trailer sold with a nearly-expired MOT may need work to pass, and that is a negotiating point rather than a surprise.
- The tail lift’s inspection. If it has one, it needs its own periodic thorough examination. That is a recurring cost the trailer alone does not carry.
- VAT, unstated. None of these twelve listings states a VAT position. At 20% a £24,750 trailer is nearly £5,000 more than it looks. On finance the funder usually advances the ex-VAT price with the VAT due up front.
What would it cost a month?
Put the ex-VAT price in, since that is what a funder normally advances. The calculator quotes a flat rate with the equivalent APR beside it.
Prime is an established, profitable business with clean credit. Specialist covers newer businesses and credit that needs explaining — the asset itself carries part of the risk, which is why finance is often available where an unsecured loan is not.
Representative example: on Hire Purchase, borrowing £10,000 over 48 months at a 5.15% flat rate (equivalent to 9.9% APR representative), you would repay around £251 a month; total amount repayable approximately £12,060, of which £2,060 is the cost of finance. This calculator is for illustration only — it is not a quote or an offer of finance, and the rate and repayments you are offered will depend on the asset, term, deposit and your circumstances. Rates shown are indicative flat rates with the equivalent APR alongside — the two are not the same number. Indicative only and does not constitute a quote or an offer of finance. Subject to status and lender approval.
Common questions
How much does a curtainside trailer cost in the UK?
From 12 live UK listings retrieved in October 2026, a used tri-axle curtainsider runs roughly £4,995 to £9,750 across 2011 to 2017 stock, with a 2011 SDC at £4,995 and a 2017 SDC with an MOT to March 2027 at £9,750. More recent trailers run considerably more: a 2021 SDC with a tail lift is £19,750 and a 2024 SDC with XL-rated curtains and Knorr-Bremse EBS is £24,750. These are advertised asking prices rather than sold prices, and none of the listings states whether VAT applies.
Why does a tail-lift trailer cost so much more?
Because it can do work the others cannot. From one dealer in the same month, a 2015 two-axle SDC with a Dhollandia tuck-away tail lift is £14,750, while the same dealer’s mechanically newer and heavier-duty 2016 and 2017 tri-axle SDCs without a lift are £7,995 and £9,750. The tail-lift trailer is older, has one axle fewer and less payload, and still costs £5,000 to £6,755 more. A tail lift lets you deliver to sites with no forklift, which widens the work you can quote for, and the market prices that capability rather than the trailer itself.
How many axles do I need?
Most of the UK used market is tri-axle, and that is what you want for maximum payload at 39,000kg plated gross. Two-axle tandem trailers are lighter and more manoeuvrable, often with a rear steer axle, and they suit tighter urban delivery work — the tail-lift trailer in our table is a two-axle for exactly that reason. The trade-off is payload. Decide on the work first: trunking between depots favours tri-axle, multi-drop in towns often favours the shorter two-axle.
Do curtainsider prices include VAT?
Not one of the twelve listings we checked states a VAT position, so assume it is payable on top until the seller confirms otherwise. At 20% that adds nearly £5,000 to a £24,750 trailer and about £1,950 to a £9,750 one. On a finance agreement the lender normally advances the ex-VAT price while the VAT falls due separately and up front, so it sits alongside your deposit rather than spreading over the term. A VAT-registered haulier reclaims it on the next return.
