Can you finance a dental X-ray?

Yes. Dental radiography sits in the comfortable middle of the market — large enough to be worth an asset agreement, small enough that decisions are quick. Panoramic units, wall-mounted intraoral tubeheads, phosphor plate scanners and direct digital sensors are all fundable, and are usually bundled into one agreement with the imaging software licence supplied at the point of sale. The detail people miss is that digital sensors are consumable in practice: they get dropped, bitten and cracked, and a funder will still expect payments on an asset that has been damaged, so insurance matters more here than on most dental kit.

Used kit: Yes — second-hand panoramic units and plate scanners are funded routinely, generally where the machine is under about eight years old and dealer installed.

What would a dental X-ray cost per month?

Business asset finance is quoted on a flat rate, so that is what this shows — with the equivalent APR underneath, because the two are not the same number. A quick guide only; your actual rate depends on the asset, term, deposit and lender.

Representative example: on Hire Purchase, borrowing £25,000 over 48 months at a 6.0% flat rate (equivalent to 11.5% APR representative), you would repay around £646 a month; total amount repayable approximately £31,000, of which £6,000 is the cost of finance. This calculator is for illustration only — it is not a quote or an offer of finance, and the rate and repayments you are offered will depend on the asset, term, deposit and your circumstances. How lenders treat it

Radiography has a shallower used market than scanners, and a wall-mounted tubehead has almost no standalone resale, so funders lean on the covenant. A GDC-registered principal with a trading practice is treated as a professional risk and most healthcare desks will write this on light paperwork. The scale is the advantage: it is a modest facility against a business that already generates income, so the affordability test is easy. Trouble arrives with new start squats, where the applicant has no accounts and the tubehead is going into a leasehold room that will not be theirs if the lease fails. That is where guarantees and a credible fit-out schedule matter. Straight declines are rare and usually credit driven — unsatisfied county court judgments, recent defaults, or a practice with an HMRC arrangement it has already broken once.

Who buys one

Practices moving off film and chemistry are still a surprisingly large slice of this. Beyond that, it is squats fitting an X-ray room from scratch, principals replacing an ageing panoramic unit that has failed its critical examination, and growing practices adding a second intraoral set so two surgeries are not queueing for one machine. Ortho and implant referrals buying a cephalometric arm on the same chassis are a regular fifth.

How it is treated for tax

Bought on hire purchase, business plant and machinery normally qualifies for capital allowances on the full cost even though you pay for it monthly, which is a large part of why hire purchase is the common structure. On a finance lease you generally set the rentals against profit instead. The rules change between budgets and your position depends on how you trade, so treat this as the direction of travel and get your accountant to confirm the detail before you commit.

Dental X-ray finance questions

Can I finance a handheld X-ray unit on its own?

You can, but the ticket is small enough that many funders will offer an unsecured business loan rather than hire purchase, simply because the administration costs the same on a small deal as a large one. If you are buying other equipment at the same time, bundling it into one schedule usually produces a better outcome.

Do digital sensors count as equipment or consumables for finance?

Funders treat the sensor as equipment because it is invoiced as capital and carries a serial number. In day-to-day life it behaves more like a consumable, which is why we push people to check their equipment insurance covers accidental damage. A cracked sensor does not pause the agreement.

Our OPG failed its critical examination. Can we fund the replacement urgently?

Yes, and this is one of the more common triggers we see. A trading practice with clean credit can often have a decision inside a working day or two, which is normally quicker than the supplier can install. Get the quote with the make, model and installation date on it and we can start immediately.

Is the imaging software licence fundable alongside the hardware?

A perpetual licence supplied on the same invoice usually is. Annual support contracts and cloud storage subscriptions usually are not, because they are ongoing services. The split is worth confirming with your dealer up front so the approved amount matches what you actually need to pay on the day.

We rent a room in a medical centre. Does that affect an X-ray application?

It can. Funders want reasonable certainty the asset will stay somewhere identifiable for the life of the agreement, so a licence to occupy with a short notice period prompts more questions than a proper lease. It rarely kills a deal, but expect to supply the occupancy agreement.
