Can you finance a granulator?

Yes. Granulators fund as hard assets on hire purchase and they are straightforward security: a heavy welded chamber, a rotor and a motor, with a steady second-hand market through plastics machinery dealers. Used granulators are funded readily. What people forget is that blades and screens are consumables with a real running cost, and a set of new knives is not part of the finance. On larger central granulators, ducting, cyclones and the soundproofing enclosure may be treated as installation rather than as the machine itself.

Used kit: Yes — used granulators fund comfortably and machines twelve to fifteen years old are routine, with rotor and bed knife condition mattering more than the year.

What would a granulator cost per month?

Business asset finance is quoted on a flat rate, so that is what this shows — with the equivalent APR underneath, because the two are not the same number. A quick guide only; your actual rate depends on the asset, term, deposit and lender.

Representative example: on Hire Purchase, borrowing £25,000 over 48 months at a 6.0% flat rate (equivalent to 11.5% APR representative), you would repay around £646 a month; total amount repayable approximately £31,000, of which £6,000 is the cost of finance. This calculator is for illustration only — it is not a quote or an offer of finance, and the rate and repayments you are offered will depend on the asset, term, deposit and your circumstances. How lenders treat it

Granulators are easy assets. They are simple, heavy, identifiable and slow to date, so values hold and underwriters are comfortable taking them as security even at a reasonable age. Dealers in used plastics machinery move them steadily. Knives, screens and screen frames are consumables and are excluded. Conveyors, metal separators and material handling quoted alongside can be added as separate assets on the same agreement. On a big central unit, acoustic enclosures, ducting and cyclone separators fixed to the building start to read as installation, with the usual questions on a leased site. The practical constraint on smaller machines is minimum deal size, which is why granulators are often funded alongside the press they serve.

Who buys one

Commonly an injection moulder tired of paying for virgin material while bagging up sprue as waste, putting a beside-the-press granulator next to each machine. Also recyclers and compounders installing a central granulator to handle purgings and reject parts, and manufacturers under customer pressure to show measurable in-house recycling of process scrap.

How it is treated for tax

Bought on hire purchase, business plant and machinery normally qualifies for capital allowances on the full cost even though you pay for it monthly, which is a large part of why hire purchase is the common structure. On a finance lease you generally set the rentals against profit instead. The rules change between budgets and your position depends on how you trade, so treat this as the direction of travel and get your accountant to confirm the detail before you commit.

Granulator finance questions

Are blades and screens part of the finance?

No. Knives, screens and screen frames wear out and get replaced on a running cost cycle, so they cannot be taken as security. A new set supplied with the machine may be absorbed into the purchase price, but do not expect replacement tooling to be fundable later.

Can I fund a granulator with a moulding machine?

Yes, and it is often the sensible way. A beside-the-press granulator on the same quotation as the press goes on one agreement with one payment, and the combined figure clears any minimum deal size without difficulty.

Is the acoustic enclosure on a central granulator fundable?

Partly. A self-contained enclosure supplied with the machine usually rides along. A soundproofed room built into the unit is construction and sits outside the agreement, as does ducting fixed into the building. Send the full quotation and we will separate the lines before you order.

How much does age matter on a granulator?

Less than on almost any other plastics asset. The engineering is simple and durable, and a fifteen year old machine with a good rotor is still worth real money. Funders will want to know it has been maintained and that bearings and knives are in reasonable order.

Can a recycling start-up fund one?

It depends on the wider picture. Funders will look at the directors, the feedstock arrangements and any offtake agreements, not just the machine. Evidence of secured material supply and a buyer for the output makes a considerable difference to how a new venture reads.
