Can you finance a deep tine aerator?

Yes. Deep tine aerators — Verti-Drain, Terra Spike and equivalents — are funded as hard assets and are among the better-regarded machines in the sector. They are heavily engineered, they last, and there is an active used market across golf, sports turf and contracting. Second-hand machines fund well. The thing that catches buyers out is power and weight: these are demanding on a tractor’s PTO, hydraulics and rear axle, and a club that funds the machine without checking the tractor can end up with two purchases instead of one.

Used kit: Yes — used deep tine machines fund well and older units are accepted, because the frame and gearbox carry the value and wearing parts are replaceable.

What would a deep tine aerator cost per month?

Asset finance is quoted on a flat rate, so that is what the buttons show, with the equivalent APR beside it. Your exact rate depends on the asset, the term, the deposit and the lender.

Prime is an established, profitable business with clean credit. Specialist covers newer businesses and credit that needs explaining — the asset itself carries part of the risk, which is why finance is often available where an unsecured loan is not.

Representative example: on Hire Purchase, borrowing £25,000 over 48 months at a 5.15% flat rate (equivalent to 9.9% APR representative), you would repay around £628 a month; total amount repayable approximately £30,150, of which £5,150 is the cost of finance. This calculator is for illustration only — it is not a quote or an offer of finance, and the rate and repayments you are offered will depend on the asset, term, deposit and your circumstances. How lenders treat it

Funders rate these machines. The engineering is substantial, the Redexim and Wiedenmann names have resale credibility across Europe, and a used deep tine machine finds a buyer quickly, so the security position is genuinely strong rather than nominal. That means underwriting focuses almost entirely on affordability. Contractors dominate this asset and are read on the shape of their work — a business deep tining for twenty councils and clubs each autumn presents very differently from one relying on a single stadium. Income is concentrated in a few months, and repayments can be profiled to match that rather than run flat. Members’ clubs are assessed on subscription strength and reserves. Declines usually involve a contractor whose last accounts show losses with no explanation, or an applicant with recent county court judgments left undisclosed.

Who buys one

Clubs with heavy clay or a long history of play on wet ground, where surface aeration has stopped making a difference and an agronomist has recommended going deeper. Also sports turf contractors who deep tine dozens of pitches each close season, racecourses managing going, and stadium grounds teams working around a fixture list. The decision is often made the winter after a soaked autumn left greens holding water for weeks.

How it is treated for tax

Bought on hire purchase, business plant and machinery normally qualifies for capital allowances on the full cost even though you pay for it monthly, which is a large part of why hire purchase is the common structure. On a finance lease you generally set the rentals against profit instead. The rules change between budgets and your position depends on how you trade, so treat this as the direction of travel and get your accountant to confirm the detail before you commit.

Deep tine aerator finance questions

Will our existing tractor run it?

Check before you order. Deep tine machines need real PTO power and enough weight on the back end to work properly. Dealers will specify a minimum, and it is often higher than clubs expect. If the tractor needs upgrading we can fund both together on one agreement.

Are these machines worth buying used?

They are one of the best used buys in turf machinery. The frames are built to last and the wearing parts — tines, bushes, bearings — are replaceable. Funders know this, which is why age is treated more leniently here than on hydraulically complex machines.

How do seasonal repayments actually work for a contractor?

Payments can be weighted towards the months when the renovation invoices are paid, with lighter periods when nothing is being aerated. The total commitment does not change, the timing does. We agree the profile with the funder before the agreement is drawn up, not afterwards.

Can we fund a machine and hire it out to neighbouring clubs?

Yes, but tell the funder. Hiring the machine out changes the risk and some agreements restrict it. Disclosed up front it is rarely a problem and several clubs run this arrangement to offset the cost. Discovered later it is a breach of the agreement. Mentioned at application stage it is simply a note on the file.

Does the tine set matter to the funder?

Only in that it forms part of the invoiced value. A full set of solid, hollow and cross tines is a meaningful cost and should be on the machine invoice if you want it funded. Replacement tines later in the agreement are a maintenance cost.
