Can you finance a turf cutter?
Yes, though the answer depends on scale. A pedestrian sod cutter is a low-value machine and usually needs packaging with other equipment for a funder to be interested. A tractor-mounted field topmaker such as a Koro is a substantial asset and funds on its own without difficulty. Used machines are fundable across both ends. What catches buyers out is that turf stripping generates enormous volumes of arisings, and the cost of loading, carting and disposing of them is a trading cost the finance will not touch.
Used kit: Yes for tractor-mounted strippers, typically to around ten years old. Yes but selectively for pedestrian sod cutters, which funders prefer newer and dealer-supplied.

What would a turf cutter cost per month?
Business asset finance is quoted on a flat rate, so that is what this shows — with the equivalent APR underneath, because the two are not the same number. A quick guide only; your actual rate depends on the asset, term, deposit and lender.
Representative example: on Hire Purchase, borrowing £25,000 over 48 months at a 6.0% flat rate (equivalent to 11.5% APR representative), you would repay around £646 a month; total amount repayable approximately £31,000, of which £6,000 is the cost of finance. This calculator is for illustration only — it is not a quote or an offer of finance, and the rate and repayments you are offered will depend on the asset, term, deposit and your circumstances. CW Asset Finance is a credit broker, not a lender, and may receive a commission from the lender that funds your agreement. All finance is subject to status, affordability and lender approval. How lenders treat it
The two ends of this asset class are underwritten quite differently and it is worth knowing which one you are asking about. Pedestrian sod cutters sit near the soft asset boundary: cheap, portable and easily stolen, so funders lean heavily on the applicant’s trading record and may simply decline a standalone purchase from a young business. Field topmakers and tractor-mounted strippers are the opposite — expensive, specialist, and sought after by a small but committed group of renovation contractors who keep values firm. On the larger machines an underwriter wants to see a renovation workload rather than an ambition, and will ask what the machine does outside the close season. Landscape contractors buying the small machines do better bundling them with a dumper, a trailer or a compact tractor from the same supplier. Theft exposure on portable kit is a genuine underwriting factor here.

Who buys one
Landscapers and groundcare contractors lifting old turf before re-laying, sports pitch renovation specialists stripping thatch-bound surfaces back to sand, and golf clubs reshaping tees, walkways and green surrounds in-house rather than bringing in a construction firm for small jobs. The trigger is usually a job won that needs a machine the business does not yet own, with a start date already agreed.

How it is treated for tax
Bought on hire purchase, business plant and machinery normally qualifies for capital allowances on the full cost even though you pay for it monthly, which is a large part of why hire purchase is the common structure. On a finance lease you generally set the rentals against profit instead. The rules change between budgets and your position depends on how you trade, so treat this as the direction of travel and get your accountant to confirm the detail before you commit.
Turf cutter finance questions
Is a pedestrian sod cutter too small to finance?
On its own it often is, particularly for a newer business. Packaged with a compact tractor, a dumper or a trailer from the same order it funds without trouble. Tell us the whole list of what you are buying rather than just the one item.
Why does theft risk come up on this asset?
Because portable machinery is stolen from sites constantly and funders price that in. Expect questions about where the machine is kept, whether it is marked or tracked, and how it is insured. Good answers make a small application noticeably easier to place. Marking and tracking cost little next to replacing a stolen machine.
Can the disposal of arisings be financed?
No. Haulage, tipping and disposal are trading costs, not assets. On a large stripping job they can exceed what the machine costs to run, so build them into your job pricing. Only the machine itself can go on an asset agreement. Contractors who forget this are the ones who lose money on stripping work.
Does a Koro fund differently from a sod cutter?
Substantially. A field topmaker is specialist plant with a firm used market among renovation contractors, so it stands on its own merits. A pedestrian cutter is a small portable machine that depends much more on your trading record. Same job, very different underwriting. Tell us which machine you actually want and we will place it accordingly.
We are a new landscaping business. Can we fund one?
Possibly, but expect to be asked for more. New businesses with no filed accounts are usually funded on the strength of the directors, often with personal support for the agreement. A small first facility that is paid on time makes the second one considerably easier.
