Line marker finance
Robotic GPS line markers have turned a cheap tool into a serious capital purchase, and they are funded quite differently from a wheeled marker.

Can you finance a line marker?
Yes, and this is an asset where the technology has changed the answer. A traditional wheeled spray marker is a low-value tool that most funders will not write on its own. A GPS robot marker is a significant capital item with software, subscription and support attached, and it funds as equipment. Used robot markers are thinly traded because the technology moves quickly. The thing that catches buyers out is the ongoing subscription: the licence and support fees are a service cost and sit outside the asset agreement, so budget them separately.
Used kit: Rarely for robot markers, where the second-hand market is thin and the technology dates quickly. Not generally for wheeled markers, which are treated as tools.

What would a line marker cost per month?
Business asset finance is quoted on a flat rate, so that is what this shows — with the equivalent APR underneath, because the two are not the same number. A quick guide only; your actual rate depends on the asset, term, deposit and lender.
Representative example: on Hire Purchase, borrowing £25,000 over 48 months at a 6.0% flat rate (equivalent to 11.5% APR representative), you would repay around £646 a month; total amount repayable approximately £31,000, of which £6,000 is the cost of finance. This calculator is for illustration only — it is not a quote or an offer of finance, and the rate and repayments you are offered will depend on the asset, term, deposit and your circumstances. CW Asset Finance is a credit broker, not a lender, and may receive a commission from the lender that funds your agreement. All finance is subject to status, affordability and lender approval. How lenders treat it
Robot markers are a relatively new asset class and funders approach them with some caution, because a machine whose value sits partly in software and a subscription is harder to resell than one whose value sits in steel. The used market is thin and evolving, so underwriters lean more on the applicant than they would for a mower of similar value. That suits institutional buyers — schools, academies, universities and councils — whose covenant is strong and whose approval process is slow but dependable. It suits contractors less well unless the marking work is contracted and evidenced. The critical practical point is invoice structure: the machine is fundable, the annual licence and support are not, and a supplier quoting one blended figure for hardware plus three years of service will need to split it before a funder can lend against the equipment.

Who buys one
Schools, colleges and councils marking dozens of pitches across several sites with a shrinking grounds team, where the hours saved are the whole business case. Also grounds contractors offering marking as a service, and rugby, football and athletics venues where line accuracy is checked against competition standards. Most buyers move after totting up how many hours a week one person spends marking by hand.

How it is treated for tax
Bought on hire purchase, business plant and machinery normally qualifies for capital allowances on the full cost even though you pay for it monthly, which is a large part of why hire purchase is the common structure. On a finance lease you generally set the rentals against profit instead. The rules change between budgets and your position depends on how you trade, so treat this as the direction of travel and get your accountant to confirm the detail before you commit.
Line marker finance questions
Can the software subscription be included in the finance?
No. Licence, support and subscription fees are services and sit outside an asset agreement. Ask the supplier to split the quotation between hardware and ongoing service. If a single blended figure is quoted, the funder will only advance against the equipment element anyway. Suppliers are used to being asked and can usually split it straight away.
Do schools and academies fund these?
Frequently, and they are among the strongest applicants for this asset. The approval route runs through the trust or local authority finance team rather than one signature, so allow more time. The covenant is excellent, the process is simply slower. Start the conversation a term before you need the machine on the ground.
Is a wheeled marker worth financing?
Usually not on its own — the value is too low and funders treat it as a tool. If you are buying one alongside a mower or a utility vehicle it can sit on the same invoice. Otherwise it is generally simpler to buy it outright.
What happens at the end of the agreement with a robot marker?
On hire purchase you own it, which matters more here than usual because the residual value is uncertain. On a lease the funder carries that uncertainty instead. Which suits you depends on how quickly you expect to want the next generation of machine. Decide that before you choose between the two routes.
Does line marking paint go on the finance?
No. Paint and concentrate are consumables and cannot be funded. They are also a continuing cost that robot markers are often sold on reducing, so it is worth checking the supplier’s usage claims independently before the business case goes to your finance team. Paint savings are easier to verify than they first appear.
