Can you finance a gang mower?

Yes. Trailed gang mowers are funded as hard assets, most often on the same agreement as the tractor that tows them, because a set of gangs on its own is a modest-value item that few funders want to write alone. Used gangs are very fundable — they are simple, long-lived and the Ransomes and Lloyds names still command a market decades on. The thing to watch is that gangs are frequently bought privately between clubs and councils, and a private sale needs proof of ownership and an inspection before a funder will release money.

Used kit: Yes — used gangs fund well and older sets are accepted, because the mechanical simplicity means age matters less here than on almost any other turf asset.

What would a gang mower cost per month?

Business asset finance is quoted on a flat rate, so that is what this shows — with the equivalent APR underneath, because the two are not the same number. A quick guide only; your actual rate depends on the asset, term, deposit and lender.

Representative example: on Hire Purchase, borrowing £25,000 over 48 months at a 6.0% flat rate (equivalent to 11.5% APR representative), you would repay around £646 a month; total amount repayable approximately £31,000, of which £6,000 is the cost of finance. This calculator is for illustration only — it is not a quote or an offer of finance, and the rate and repayments you are offered will depend on the asset, term, deposit and your circumstances. CW Asset Finance is a credit broker, not a lender, and may receive a commission from the lender that funds your agreement. All finance is subject to status, affordability and lender approval. How lenders treat it

Gangs are an odd asset for underwriters: individually low value but with a stubbornly long life and a genuine second-hand market, so they are not treated as disposable. Funders will almost always prefer to see them bundled with a tractor, which lifts the total and gives the agreement a registered, identifiable machine at its centre. Sports clubs and members’ organisations are assessed on subscription income and reserves; contractors on the contract behind the work; local authorities through a public sector process. Private sales are the recurring problem — no dealer invoice, unclear title, no warranty — and are the main reason these applications stall. Repayments can be concentrated into the growing season. Declines usually follow a club with no accounts at all.

Who buys one

Sports clubs and parks departments cutting large flat areas where a set of gangs behind an existing tractor is far cheaper than a dedicated wide-area machine. Also polo grounds, racecourses and airfields, and golf courses using gangs on practice grounds and out-of-play areas. The trigger is usually an expanding area to cut without a matching expansion in staff. Volunteer-run sports grounds buy this way too, because a set of gangs is the cheapest way to cover a lot of ground.

How it is treated for tax

Bought on hire purchase, business plant and machinery normally qualifies for capital allowances on the full cost even though you pay for it monthly, which is a large part of why hire purchase is the common structure. On a finance lease you generally set the rentals against profit instead. The rules change between budgets and your position depends on how you trade, so treat this as the direction of travel and get your accountant to confirm the detail before you commit.

Gang mower finance questions

Can we fund gangs on their own without a tractor?

Sometimes, but the choice of funder narrows because of the value. If you already own a suitable tractor we will still look at it, and we will tell you honestly whether the market is there. If you need both, putting them on one agreement is simpler and gives a better outcome.

We are buying a set from another club. Will that fund?

It can, but expect extra steps. The funder needs written confirmation that the seller owns the gangs outright, a proper invoice or bill of sale, and often an independent inspection. Build a fortnight into your timetable and do not agree a completion date with the seller until we confirm the route.

How long can a set of gangs realistically be funded over?

Funders match the term to the expected working life, and gangs last a long time, so there is more flexibility than on a complex hydraulic machine. We will not quote periods on the website, but it is one of the assets where a longer view is defensible to an underwriter.

Do gangs need separate insurance?

They need to be covered under your plant or club policy, and the funder will ask for evidence. Because they are towed rather than driven, they sometimes fall between a motor policy and a plant policy, so check with your broker that they are actually named rather than assuming.

Can we add a set of gangs to an existing tractor agreement?

Not to the existing agreement, but we can arrange a second facility alongside it. If the tractor agreement is well progressed, some funders will look at a combined refinance that settles the old one and funds the gangs together, which can tidy up the monthly position.
