Greenkeeping workshop equipment finance
Grinders, lifts and benches turn a shed into a maintenance facility, and the grinding equipment is a far bigger purchase than most committees expect.

Can you finance greenkeeping workshop equipment?
Yes. Cylinder grinders, bottom blade grinders, vehicle lifts and workshop packages fund as hard assets. The grinders are the significant items — a Bernhard or Foley pair is a serious capital purchase and funds on its own merits. Used grinders are fundable and the market is small but steady. The thing that catches clubs out is that grinders often need three-phase power, a level floor and ventilation, and the electrical work to make the workshop suitable is a building cost that sits outside the equipment agreement.
Used kit: Yes — used grinders fund, often to around ten years old, because the machines are built for a long life and manufacturer support continues for older models.

What would greenkeeping workshop equipment cost per month?
Business asset finance is quoted on a flat rate, so that is what this shows — with the equivalent APR underneath, because the two are not the same number. A quick guide only; your actual rate depends on the asset, term, deposit and lender.
Representative example: on Hire Purchase, borrowing £25,000 over 48 months at a 6.0% flat rate (equivalent to 11.5% APR representative), you would repay around £646 a month; total amount repayable approximately £31,000, of which £6,000 is the cost of finance. This calculator is for illustration only — it is not a quote or an offer of finance, and the rate and repayments you are offered will depend on the asset, term, deposit and your circumstances. How lenders treat it
Workshop equipment is where the hard and soft asset line gets tested. A precision grinder is expensive, manufacturer-supported and genuinely resaleable to other clubs and dealers, which keeps it on the right side of the line, and funders who know the sector will treat it as machinery. Benches, tool chests, shelving and hand tools are not fundable at all, and a quotation bundling them with a grinder will need itemising. Floor-fixed items raise a question about whether the equipment becomes a fixture, so funders prefer bolted-down rather than built-in. The credit view is ordinary club underwriting — subscription strength, reserves, existing commitments — with one twist: this purchase produces no visible improvement to members, so committees sometimes struggle to justify it internally long before a funder ever sees it. Getting the maintenance case written down helps both conversations.

Who buys one
Clubs that have been sending cutting units away to be ground and losing machines for a week each time, usually acting after a season where cut quality suffered. Also multi-course venues and management groups setting up a central workshop to service several sites, and colleges running greenkeeping training who need the equipment for the curriculum. The push normally comes from the head greenkeeper rather than from the committee or the finance office.

How it is treated for tax
Bought on hire purchase, business plant and machinery normally qualifies for capital allowances on the full cost even though you pay for it monthly, which is a large part of why hire purchase is the common structure. On a finance lease you generally set the rentals against profit instead. The rules change between budgets and your position depends on how you trade, so treat this as the direction of travel and get your accountant to confirm the detail before you commit.
Greenkeeping workshop equipment finance questions
Can the electrical work be included?
Generally no. Three-phase supply upgrades, new distribution boards, extraction and flooring are building works and sit outside equipment finance. Get a separate quotation for the enabling works and budget them, because discovering them after ordering a grinder is a common and avoidable problem. Ask the grinder supplier what the machine needs before you sign anything.
Are benches, tools and storage fundable?
Not on their own — they are consumable and fixture items rather than machinery. If they appear on the same quotation as a grinder, the funder will strip them out and advance against the machine. Ask the supplier to itemise the quote so you know what is being funded.
Is in-house grinding actually worth the investment?
It usually comes down to how often you grind and how long machines are off the course when sent away. Clubs that grind frequently make the case easily. Clubs grinding twice a year often do not, and we would rather say so than process an application regardless.
Can a vehicle lift be financed with the grinders?
Yes, if invoiced together. A two-post or four-post lift is machinery and funds alongside grinding equipment on one agreement. The installation and any floor strengthening are separate building costs, so keep those on a different quotation. A lift and grinders on one agreement is a tidy way to equip a workshop.
Our committee cannot see the benefit. Any advice?
Put it in cutting quality and machine downtime rather than in workshop terms. The argument that lands is the number of days a season a machine is unavailable and what that does to presentation. A funder never sees this discussion, but it is usually what decides whether the purchase happens.
