Scarifier finance
Scarifiers strip thatch and surface organic matter from fairways and pitches, and the tractor-mounted machines are solid funding propositions.

Can you finance a scarifier?
Yes. Scarifiers are funded as hard assets on hire purchase or lease. Tractor-mounted machines from Wiedenmann, SISIS and Redexim place easily because they are substantial, serial-numbered and hold value. Used machines are readily fundable. Where applications come unstuck is the tractor. Many scarifiers need more horsepower and a heavier linkage than a club actually owns, and buyers occasionally find themselves funding a machine their tractor cannot pull. Confirm the power and linkage requirement with the dealer before the order goes in, because a funded machine you cannot use is still a funded machine.
Used kit: Yes — used scarifiers fund well, commonly up to around ten years old, since the working parts are replaceable and the frame is what carries the value.

What would a scarifier cost per month?
Business asset finance is quoted on a flat rate, so that is what this shows — with the equivalent APR underneath, because the two are not the same number. A quick guide only; your actual rate depends on the asset, term, deposit and lender.
Representative example: on Hire Purchase, borrowing £25,000 over 48 months at a 6.0% flat rate (equivalent to 11.5% APR representative), you would repay around £646 a month; total amount repayable approximately £31,000, of which £6,000 is the cost of finance. This calculator is for illustration only — it is not a quote or an offer of finance, and the rate and repayments you are offered will depend on the asset, term, deposit and your circumstances. CW Asset Finance is a credit broker, not a lender, and may receive a commission from the lender that funds your agreement. All finance is subject to status, affordability and lender approval. How lenders treat it
A tractor-mounted scarifier is a straightforward piece of security. The build is heavy, the marques are recognised, and end-of-season renovation demand means there is a predictable stream of contractors and councils shopping second hand. Underwriters therefore concentrate on the buyer rather than the machine. Contractors are the interesting case here, because renovation work is intensely seasonal — a handful of weeks generate most of the year’s income from this machine — and funders will ask what carries the payments the rest of the time. Repayments can be structured to land when the renovation invoices do. Clubs are assessed on subscriptions and reserves in the usual way. The common decline is a newly formed contracting business with no filed accounts buying a machine for a single unconfirmed season of work.

Who buys one
Courses moving from patch-and-hope to a proper annual renovation programme, usually after a thick thatch layer starts causing soft, disease-prone surfaces. Also local authority grounds teams who have brought pitch renovation back in-house after years of contracting it, and sports turf contractors bidding for end-of-season renovation work at multiple grounds. The purchase is usually signed off in spring for delivery ahead of the autumn window.

How it is treated for tax
Bought on hire purchase, business plant and machinery normally qualifies for capital allowances on the full cost even though you pay for it monthly, which is a large part of why hire purchase is the common structure. On a finance lease you generally set the rentals against profit instead. The rules change between budgets and your position depends on how you trade, so treat this as the direction of travel and get your accountant to confirm the detail before you commit.
Scarifier finance questions
Do we need to buy the tractor at the same time?
Not necessarily, but check the machine matches what you own. Scarifiers are demanding on power and hydraulics. If your tractor is marginal, we would rather fund both together on one agreement than see you stuck with a machine that stalls the tractor on the first pass.
Can the blades and tungsten tips be included?
The blades fitted on delivery are part of the machine and sit inside the finance. Replacement sets bought later are consumables and cannot be added to an existing agreement. If you want a spare set funded, put it on the original order. Dealers are used to the request and will itemise them.
Is a pedestrian scarifier worth financing?
On its own it is usually too small for most funders to write. Packaged with a mower, an aerator or a seeder it fits comfortably. Tell us the whole shopping list for the year and we will structure it as one facility rather than several awkward small ones.
How do funders view a contractor buying purely for renovation season?
Cautiously, unless you can show the work. Signed renovation agreements with named venues, a history of repeat customers, or other machinery earning across the year all help. A machine bought on the expectation of winning work is the weakest version of this application. Winning the work first and funding second is the safer order.
Can we refinance a scarifier we already own to release cash?
Often yes, if you own it outright and can evidence that. A funder will value the machine, advance against it and take title, and the cash can go towards other renovation kit. It is a useful route when several machines are owned free of finance.
