Can you finance a turf aerator?

Yes. Surface aerators such as the Toro ProCore and John Deere Aercore range fund as hard assets on hire purchase or lease, and they are one of the easier fine-turf machines to place because almost every course in the country has one. Used machines fund readily. The detail that surprises clubs is tine cost: a full set of tines and holders can be a significant part of the order, and if the dealer invoices them separately as spares they fall outside the finance. Ask for one invoice covering machine and tine sets.

Used kit: Yes — used aerators fund comfortably, generally up to about eight years old where the tine head and drive have been maintained.

What would a turf aerator cost per month?

Business asset finance is quoted on a flat rate, so that is what this shows — with the equivalent APR underneath, because the two are not the same number. A quick guide only; your actual rate depends on the asset, term, deposit and lender.

Representative example: on Hire Purchase, borrowing £25,000 over 48 months at a 6.0% flat rate (equivalent to 11.5% APR representative), you would repay around £646 a month; total amount repayable approximately £31,000, of which £6,000 is the cost of finance. This calculator is for illustration only — it is not a quote or an offer of finance, and the rate and repayments you are offered will depend on the asset, term, deposit and your circumstances. How lenders treat it

Underwriters see a lot of these and are comfortable with them. The machines are self-propelled or PTO-driven, carry clear serial numbers, and there is a steady used market driven by clubs and contractors trading up, so realisable value is easy to evidence. The interest is therefore in the income behind the purchase. A members’ club with a full subscription book is a benign risk even where profit is slim, because the cash is recurring and predictable; a proprietary course is judged on green fee performance across the last couple of seasons. Local authority buyers come through a separate approval route. Repayments can be shaped to follow the playing and income season. What gets refused is a club already in arrears elsewhere, or a contractor whose only evidence of work is a verbal arrangement.

Who buys one

Greenkeepers who have been hiring an aerator for two windows a year and have realised the hire bill is recurring while the machine is not. Also clubs where a wet autumn has made compaction and surface water an issue visible to members, and school and university grounds teams bringing aeration in-house to keep pitches playable through winter. The order normally goes in during the summer, ahead of the autumn renovation window.

How it is treated for tax

Bought on hire purchase, business plant and machinery normally qualifies for capital allowances on the full cost even though you pay for it monthly, which is a large part of why hire purchase is the common structure. On a finance lease you generally set the rentals against profit instead. The rules change between budgets and your position depends on how you trade, so treat this as the direction of travel and get your accountant to confirm the detail before you commit.

Turf aerator finance questions

Should the tines be on the finance?

The set fitted at delivery should be, and a spare set can be if it is on the same invoice. Tines are a real cost on this machine, so leaving them out means you fund less than you are actually spending. Ask the dealer to itemise them on the machine invoice.

We hire one twice a year. Is buying really better?

It depends on how many days you use it and whether the hire window is ever unavailable when you need it. Clubs usually switch when hire availability has cost them a renovation window. We are happy to look at the numbers with you rather than assume the answer.

Does a tractor-mounted aerator fund differently from a pedestrian one?

The class is the same but the value is not. A tractor-mounted unit is a larger asset and sits comfortably with more funders. A pedestrian machine is smaller and often better placed as part of a package with other turf kit from the same order.

Can a university or college buy this way?

Yes. Universities and colleges fund groundcare machinery regularly, though procurement rules mean the approval chain is longer and you may need quotes from multiple suppliers. Bring us in early so the finance approval is not the thing holding up the purchase order. We are well used to working around procurement timetables.

What if the machine needs a specific tractor to run it?

Then confirm compatibility before ordering. If the tractor also needs replacing, we would look at funding both together. It is far better to identify that at quotation stage than after a machine has been delivered that your fleet cannot drive. A dealer will confirm the power requirement in writing if you ask.
