Can you finance a verticutter?

Yes, with one distinction worth understanding. A dedicated verticutter such as a Graden is a machine in its own right and funds as a hard asset. A verticutting cassette that drops into a Dennis or a Toro unit is an attachment, and funders will only advance against it if it appears on the invoice with the host machine. Used dedicated verticutters fund reasonably well. The point clubs miss is that buying the cassettes a season after the mower, out of the maintenance budget, means they cannot be financed retrospectively.

Used kit: Yes for dedicated machines, typically up to around seven or eight years old. Rarely for loose cassettes, which are treated as parts rather than an asset.

What would a verticutter cost per month?

Business asset finance is quoted on a flat rate, so that is what this shows — with the equivalent APR underneath, because the two are not the same number. A quick guide only; your actual rate depends on the asset, term, deposit and lender.

Representative example: on Hire Purchase, borrowing £25,000 over 48 months at a 6.0% flat rate (equivalent to 11.5% APR representative), you would repay around £646 a month; total amount repayable approximately £31,000, of which £6,000 is the cost of finance. This calculator is for illustration only — it is not a quote or an offer of finance, and the rate and repayments you are offered will depend on the asset, term, deposit and your circumstances. How lenders treat it

Verticutters sit at the smaller end of turf machinery, so the covenant matters more than the asset. A dedicated unit has an identifiable serial number and a small but real used market among contractors, which is enough to keep it out of the soft asset bracket for most funders. Cassettes are not separately fundable and underwriters will say so. The buyer profile splits sharply: a members’ club is read on subscriptions and reserves and is generally a comfortable risk, while a renovation contractor is read on whether the machine will be earning across multiple customers or waiting for one annual contract. Clubs buying this alongside an aerator or mower get an easier ride because the package value carries it. Declines follow thin or absent accounts on a low-value application.

Who buys one

Head greenkeepers dealing with an organic matter problem that hollow coring alone has not fixed, usually after a soil test or an agronomist’s report has put it in writing to the committee. Also sports turf contractors adding a renovation service, and cricket and bowls venues where the surface has become spongy and the annual renovation window is the only chance to correct it.

How it is treated for tax

Bought on hire purchase, business plant and machinery normally qualifies for capital allowances on the full cost even though you pay for it monthly, which is a large part of why hire purchase is the common structure. On a finance lease you generally set the rentals against profit instead. The rules change between budgets and your position depends on how you trade, so treat this as the direction of travel and get your accountant to confirm the detail before you commit.

Verticutter finance questions

Why can I not finance the cassettes on their own?

Because a funder needs an asset it could identify and recover. A cassette without a host machine is a part, not a machine, and there is no practical way to secure against it. If you want cassettes funded, order them with the mower on the same invoice and the whole package becomes the asset.

Is a Graden treated differently from a mower-mounted unit?

Yes. A Graden or similar dedicated verticutter is a standalone machine with its own serial number and its own used market, so it funds on its own merits. A mounted unit depends entirely on the machine it fits, which is why the two are underwritten quite differently.

We only use it two weeks a year. Does that affect the finance?

Not the approval, but it should affect your thinking. Low annual use is exactly why some clubs hire the machine for the renovation window instead. We will tell you if the numbers point that way — there is no point financing a machine that sits in the shed for fifty weeks.

Can a contractor fund this against a renovation contract?

Yes, and the contract strengthens the application. Funders will ask how long it runs, who the customer is and whether you have other work. A contractor with several venues on annual renovation agreements looks very different from one with a single seasonal booking. Bring the contracts with you rather than describing them.

Will the finance cover the sand or dressing that goes with it?

No. Consumables, sand, seed and dressing are trading costs and cannot be included in an asset agreement. Only the machine and its permanently fitted equipment are fundable. Budget the materials separately or discuss a working capital facility as a different conversation. Materials come out of the maintenance budget at almost every club we deal with.
