Business car finance and how it differs
Funding a car through the business is a different conversation from funding one personally. The lender underwrites the company, the VAT and tax treatment change, and the agreement sits on the balance sheet rather than against your name. For directors and owner-managers that is usually the better route.
Company car finance and limited company car finance
Limited company car finance puts the agreement in the company’s name, often with a director’s guarantee behind it. Hire purchase means the company owns the car at the end and may claim capital allowances; contract hire keeps it off the balance sheet with a fixed monthly cost and no disposal risk. Which suits depends on mileage, how long you keep vehicles and your accountant’s view.
Business vehicle finance across a fleet
Business vehicle finance is not only about cars. Directors’ vehicles, pool cars, sales fleets and light commercials can be funded on one facility, which is simpler to administer than separate agreements running to different end dates.
Self-employed car finance
Self employed car finance is the request we are asked about most. Sole traders and contractors are the group most often declined by direct lenders, usually for want of two or three years of filed accounts rather than anything to do with affordability. Several lenders on our panel assess self-employed applicants properly, using bank statements and contracts where accounts are thin.
Hire purchase, balloon payments and lease
Hire purchase on a car spreads the full cost and you own it at the end. Adding a balloon lowers the monthly payment by deferring part of the cost to a final lump sum, which you pay to keep the car or settle by selling or part-exchanging it. Finance lease and contract hire fund use rather than ownership. We will explain the trade-offs in plain terms rather than steering you to whichever pays us best.
Prestige, classic and electric
Prestige car finance and classic car finance need lenders who value the asset properly rather than applying standard depreciation — a classic that appreciates behaves nothing like a three-year-old hatchback. Electric and hybrid vehicles increasingly make sense through a company for tax reasons; worth a conversation with your accountant alongside us.

Petrol, hybrid or electric: which car fits your use?
Start with your journeys and charging access, then compare the exact vehicles. The power source alone does not establish which car costs less to own.
| Option | When to consider it | Cost considerations | Check before buying |
|---|---|---|---|
| Petrol or diesel | An engine-powered car where refuelling access suits your journeys. | Compare purchase price, fuel use, servicing and vehicle-specific running costs. | Match the engine to your mileage and journey pattern; check service history on used cars. |
| Hybrid or plug-in hybrid | A car combining an engine and electric drive; plug-in models also use external charging. | Include charging arrangements for a plug-in model; do not assume all hybrids have the same running costs. | Identify whether it is mild, full or plug-in hybrid and check how that system works. |
| Battery electric | Journeys that can be supported by suitable charging access. | Include charger installation where needed, electricity tariffs and the actual vehicle price. | Check usable range for your journeys, charging compatibility and battery warranty or condition. |

How finance works on cars
The prices above are what a seller is asking. What a funder will actually do with the purchase is a separate question, and it is the one that decides whether the deal happens.
| Question | Typical answer |
|---|---|
| Term available | 12 to 72 months. Most agreements sit between 24 and 60 months; anything shorter or longer needs a funder check before you rely on it. |
| Age of the asset | There is no single cut-off. It depends on the asset class, and condition, hours and resale value are underwritten rather than the year alone. Tell us the age and we will say before you commit. |
| Buying from a private seller | Often possible, but case by case. It needs a funder who will write it, an inspection and proof of ownership, so say whether the seller is a dealer or a private seller when you enquire. |
| Deposit | Frequently nil where the credit profile is standard. Where it is not, typically 10–20%, nearer 20% if a default is recent. |
| VAT on the purchase | Both approaches exist, depending on the funder. The agreement is commonly written on the ex-VAT price with the VAT paid upfront and reclaimed, though some funders will include the VAT in the agreement. |

Estimate your repayments
Asset finance is quoted on a flat rate, so that is what the buttons show, with the equivalent APR beside it. Your exact rate depends on the asset, the term, the deposit and the lender.
Prime is an established, profitable business with clean credit. Specialist covers newer businesses and credit that needs explaining — the asset itself carries part of the risk, which is why finance is often available where an unsecured loan is not.
Representative example: on Hire Purchase, borrowing £25,000 over 48 months at a 5.15% flat rate (equivalent to 9.9% APR representative), you would repay around £628 a month; total amount repayable approximately £30,150, of which £5,150 is the cost of finance. This calculator is for illustration only — it is not a quote or an offer of finance, and the rate and repayments you are offered will depend on the asset, term, deposit and your circumstances. CW Asset Finance is a credit broker, not a lender, and will receive a commission from the lender that funds your agreement. All finance is subject to status, affordability and lender approval.
Rates shown are indicative flat rates with the equivalent APR alongside — the two are not the same number. Indicative only and does not constitute a quote or an offer of finance. Subject to status and lender approval.

If your business does not fit a tick box
Plenty of well-run businesses get turned down by a high street computer for reasons that have nothing to do with how they trade — no filed accounts yet, or no limited company behind them. Neither is a credit problem. If one of these is you, there is a page written for it.
- Trading under two years, or no filed accounts yet — a new company with a clean record is priced differently, not excluded.
- A sole trader rather than a limited company — the lender looks at you and your trade instead of a set of company accounts.
- Wondering what deposit you actually need — and what the VAT does on day one, which catches most people out.
- Equipment you already own outright — refinancing it releases working capital without a new unsecured facility.
What a new-start application needs. Good credit, and no outstanding CCJs or IVAs. Beyond that, lenders want to see one of two things: that you are a homeowner, or that you can evidence income sufficient to service the monthly payments. A deposit in the 10–20% range is normal.
If that describes you, there is a realistic conversation to have. If it does not, we would rather tell you now than run a credit search that leaves a footprint for nothing.
