Treadmill fleet finance

Treadmills wear out on a predictable cycle, so clubs usually replace them as a fleet and fund them across that same cycle.

Can you finance a treadmill fleet?

Yes. A treadmill fleet is one of the more straightforward funding requests in the leisure sector. Commercial treadmills from recognised manufacturers are serial-numbered, sit on a ground-floor gym floor in most cases and have an active refurbishment market, so funders can see a recovery route. Hire purchase and leasing are both common, with leasing suiting clubs that refresh cardio regularly. Refurbished machines are fundable through established suppliers. The catch is servicing: treadmills carry the highest maintenance burden of any cardio asset, and that ongoing cost sits outside the finance agreement.

Used kit: Yes, refurbished commercial treadmills are readily funded where the supplier provides warranty cover and the serial numbers are listed on the schedule.

What would a treadmill fleet cost per month?

Business asset finance is quoted on a flat rate, so that is what this shows — with the equivalent APR underneath, because the two are not the same number. A quick guide only; your actual rate depends on the asset, term, deposit and lender.

Representative example: on Hire Purchase, borrowing £25,000 over 48 months at a 6.0% flat rate (equivalent to 11.5% APR representative), you would repay around £646 a month; total amount repayable approximately £31,000, of which £6,000 is the cost of finance. This calculator is for illustration only — it is not a quote or an offer of finance, and the rate and repayments you are offered will depend on the asset, term, deposit and your circumstances. How lenders treat it

Cardio is where the sector’s soft asset problem eases. A branded commercial treadmill is identifiable, in demand second-hand and physically recoverable, which is not true of the flooring it stands on or the mirrors behind it. That said, funders still assess the club: membership income is cancellable, and a gym’s fixed cost base is unforgiving. Expect a personal guarantee for independent operators, though established multi-site groups and leisure trusts are often assessed on accounts alone. One practical point specific to treadmills: because they depreciate faster than resistance kit through sheer running hours, funders sometimes prefer a lease structure with a planned refresh rather than a long hire purchase on machines that will be tired well before the end.

Who buys one

The usual applicant is a gym whose treadmills are logging heavy hours and starting to fail belts, decks and motors in sequence. Leisure trusts, hotel gyms and university facilities replace on planned cycles. The trigger is often an engineer’s report saying that repairing the existing fleet is no longer sensible, or a members’ survey pointing squarely at the cardio row.

How it is treated for tax

Bought on hire purchase, business plant and machinery normally qualifies for capital allowances on the full cost even though you pay for it monthly, which is a large part of why hire purchase is the common structure. On a finance lease you generally set the rentals against profit instead. The rules change between budgets and your position depends on how you trade, so treat this as the direction of travel and get your accountant to confirm the detail before you commit.

Treadmill fleet finance questions

Should I lease or buy treadmills?

It depends on how often you refresh. Clubs on a regular cardio replacement cycle often prefer a lease, because the machines are returned or refreshed rather than kept past their best. Operators who run equipment for as long as it will go usually prefer hire purchase and ownership. Your accountant can advise on the treatment.

Can the service contract be included?

Servicing is normally a separate arrangement with the supplier, because it is a service rather than an asset. Some suppliers offer bundled packages, and elements may appear on the same quotation. Funders will want to see what proportion of the total is hardware, since that is the only part with recovery value.

How many machines make a fleet for funding purposes?

There is no formal definition. What matters is that the total advance is large enough to interest a funder, which a handful of commercial treadmills usually is. Smaller orders can be combined with bikes, rowers or cross-trainers on a single schedule, which most clubs do anyway when refreshing a cardio row.

Are treadmills harder to recover from upstairs gyms?

Yes, and funders are aware of it. Access is a genuine factor in recovery cost, so an upstairs facility with a narrow stair and no goods lift weakens the asset position slightly. It rarely decides an application on its own, but it is one of the things that sits behind a funder’s appetite for a particular site.

Can I part-exchange my old treadmills?

Frequently, yes. Suppliers often take the outgoing fleet in part exchange and offset it against the new order, which reduces the amount to be financed. Where the old machines are themselves on an existing agreement, that agreement needs settling first, so check the settlement position before agreeing a trade-in value.
