Yes. Spreaders fund on hire purchase and there is a steady secondhand market, particularly for mainstream makes with stainless steel discs and vanes. The single thing that determines value is corrosion. Fertiliser is aggressive and a spreader left unwashed at the end of a season will show it in the hopper, the frame and the fixings, whatever the year on the plate. Used machines are funded routinely where they have been looked after. If the spreader has weigh cells, headland control or a variable rate system, make sure they appear on the invoice, because a good part of the value sits there.
Used kit: Yes, provided the hopper and frame have not corroded and the electronics work

Business asset finance is quoted on a flat rate, so that is what this shows — with the equivalent APR underneath, because the two are not the same number. A quick guide only; your actual rate depends on the asset, term, deposit and lender.
Representative example: on Hire Purchase, borrowing £25,000 over 48 months at a 6.0% flat rate (equivalent to 11.5% APR representative), you would repay around £646 a month; total amount repayable approximately £31,000, of which £6,000 is the cost of finance. This calculator is for illustration only — it is not a quote or an offer of finance, and the rate and repayments you are offered will depend on the asset, term, deposit and your circumstances. CW Asset Finance is a credit broker, not a lender, and may receive a commission from the lender that funds your agreement. All finance is subject to status, affordability and lender approval. CW Asset Finance is an Appointed Representative of Rural Finance Limited, which is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FRN 630701).
Spreaders are a mobile hard asset with an honest secondhand market, so underwriting is light, but funders know this is the machine most likely to be ruined by neglect. They look at hopper condition, the discs and vanes, the frame around the fixings, and whether the electronics still communicate with the tractor. Stainless machines hold value markedly better than painted steel. Trailed spreaders carry more value and sit more comfortably as standalone deals; a mounted machine is often bundled with a tractor purchase. Contractors should expect questions about spread pattern testing and calibration records, since an uncalibrated machine is a liability to the farms they work for. Arable customers can normally get harvest-weighted repayments.
Examples of the machines we are asked to fund. This is not an exhaustive list — if what you are buying is not here, it does not mean we cannot fund it. Your supplier quote is what the agreement is written against.

Arable farms applying nitrogen accurately to protect yield and stay within nutrient planning limits, grassland farms spreading across a long season, and contractors spreading for others. The purchase is often prompted by an assurance scheme or nutrient management requirement for a calibrated, tested spreader, by a move to wider tramlines, or by a machine whose spread pattern has drifted and is showing as striping in the crop.

Bought on hire purchase, business plant and machinery normally qualifies for capital allowances on the full cost even though you pay for it monthly, which is a large part of why hire purchase is the common structure. On a finance lease you generally set the rentals against profit instead. The rules change between budgets and your position depends on how you trade, so treat this as the direction of travel and get your accountant to confirm the detail before you commit.
Because fertiliser attacks steel and the damage is structural, not cosmetic. A hopper thinning at the base or a frame corroded around the fixings has a short remaining life, and a funder valuing a used machine knows it. A spreader washed off after every use can look almost new years later.
They are valued more highly, which comes to the same thing. Stainless discs, vanes and hoppers resist the chemistry far better and sell on for more, so a funder has a better recovery position. If you are choosing between a painted and a stainless machine, factor resale into the decision as well as price.
Yes, and they should be itemised on the invoice. Nutrient planning and assurance requirements are pushing farms towards recorded, variable application, and a spreader with a working weigh system is worth appreciably more secondhand than one without.
It is not a finance condition, but assurance schemes and good practice increasingly expect calibration and tray testing, and contractors are effectively obliged to keep records. A tested machine spreads accurately, which is worth more in saved fertiliser than the test costs.
Sometimes. A large trailed machine stands on its own comfortably; a mounted one may not. Where it is marginal, buy it on the same invoice as the tractor or another implement so the agreement reaches a workable size. That approach is used constantly on mixed machinery orders.
